Zin bill nixed, 49ers stadium bill OK’d

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed a measure Monday that would have designated California’s Zinfandels as the state’s “historic wine.”

Sponsored by Sen. Carole Migden, who represents part of San Francisco as well as the wine country in Marin and Sonoma counties, SB 1253 originally sought to make the red wine the official state wine but could only get the title “historic” passed through the legislature.

According to the legislation’s text, Zinfandel deserved the distinction because it was a “favorite drink of the Gold Rush miners and has consistently been one of the most popular selling varietals.”

Nonetheless, the governor said it would be inappropriate to single out one California wine for special recognition.

“To name only one of the many varietals in California as the historic wine fails to recognize the many world class varietals produced in the state,” Schwarzenegger wrote in his veto message to the state Senate.

Schwarzenegger did give his signature of approval to another bill by Migden. SB 1842 allows a judge to take an early look at plans for a new San Francisco 49ers stadium at Candlestick Point and determine whether the proposal is consistent with the will of voters, who approved a different plan in 1997.
