Zagat announces top S.F. food

For the sixth year in a row, Gary Danko wins top honors for best food, according to participants in the “Zagat Survey 2008 San Francisco Bay Area Restaurants” guide.

Gary Danko also scored highest for most popular restaurant, according to the results, which were announced Wednesday in San Francisco.

Other high ranking eateries included Pacific’s Edge for décor, Erna’s Elderberry House for service, and Perbacco for top newcomer.

About 8,000 frequent diners participated in the survey, which was edited by Randi Gollin and Meesha Halm, and is now available in bookstores or by calling (888) 371-5440.

The guide includes restaurants from the wine country in the north to Lake Tahoe in the northeast to Carmel in the south; 1,150 eateries are covered.

Zagat officials pointed to The City’s thriving restaurant scene, which has bounced back since the dot-com collapse in the early 2000s.

Tim Zagat, co-chariman of Zagat Survey, says, “It’s great to see how far San Francisco has come from the dark days of 2001 and 2002. San Francisco has always been a great dining destination, but given its size, it is one of the most dynamic dining destinations in America today.”

The average cost of a meal in The City is $37.08. The only places where dining is more costly are New York, Palm Beach and Las Vegas.

Other top scorers in the survey include Farm and Hime for best newcomers; and Underdog, Gialina, Burger Bar, Taylor’s Automatic Refresher and Burgers and Half Bottles for best take out, or “fast” food.

Popular wine bars include Laiola, Bar Bambino, District, Nua and Rouge et Blanc.
