He was the great voice of Tower of Power’s classic “You’re Still a Young Man.”

Rick Stevens, former lead singer of the East Bay soul band, has died. His son and manager Clarence Maloney said his father, 77, died Tuesday after a being diagnosed with liver cancer three months ago, according to KTVU.

On Stevens’ website, his ex-wife Georgina Stevenson wrote, “For 41 years Rick was the biggest and best part of my life; I will miss him very much, and love him forever.”

“Rick Stevens went to heaven today to be with the Lord whom he loved with all his heart. Rick was an extremely soulful singer and entertainer who had an engaging personality and a strong faith which he shared with all he came in contact with,” Tower of Power leader Emilio Castillo wrote on Facebook.

Stevens joined the Oakland-based soul band in 1969, and sang lead on its signature 1972 tune off the album “Bump City.”

His life was not without discord. In 1976, after he left the band, he was addicted to drugs and shot three men to death during a deal gone wrong. Sentenced to life in prison, he served 36 years before being released on parole in 2012.

In 2014, he began performing locally with a new group, “Rick Stevens & Love Power.”

On Tuesday, the Minnesota Court of Appeals said a lower court correctly rejected their claims to be Prince’s heirs.

In May, Judge Kevin Eide ruled that Prince had no will when he died in April 2016 of an accidental painkiller overdose, and that six surviving siblings are his legal heirs. He ruled earlier that John L. Nelson and Mattie Shaw were presumed to be Prince’s parents since they were married when he was born.

This rejected group claimed Nelson wasn’t really Prince’s father, and they were his half-siblings through other men.
