A young woman was stabbed around 5 p.m. on Wednesday on Fifth Street near Market Street in an apparently unprovoked attack and taken away by ambulance, leaving a pool of blood on the street.

A girl was arrested a short time later half a block away, near Market and Turk streets, in connection with the attack, according to police.

“It was vicious. It was senseless. I don’t know what else to say,” said Valentin Wong, 37, who witnessed the stabbing.

Wong said the suspect, who police described as a juvenile female, was arguing with a man as they walked down the street.

Two young women were passing in the other direction when the suspect punched one of them once and then kept walking, Wong said.

“It was out of nowhere, without provocation,” Wong said. “It looked like a regular punch, but apparently she was stabbed.”

Both Wong and police officers at the scene said the suspect was talking incoherently.

“She was yelling, saying nonsensical things. I couldn’t even make out what she was saying, she was just screaming,” Wong said.
