Who’s that Jack?

World, meet Jack, er, Loudon.

The venerable author of such classics as “Call of the Wild” and “Martin Eden” fell victim to every journalist’s worst nightmare: misspelling a name. And it happened to be his debut work.

Perhaps an Examiner typesetter had a bit too much tipple on Christmas Eve, but on Dec. 25, 1895 the world met Jack London, the boy socialist of Oakland.

Nineteen at the time, London had recently returned to California after traveling the world as a stowaway. He was known as a great orator, and indeed he stands high on his soapbox to tell Examiner readers why socialism is a worthy form of government and not at all anarchy or nihilism.

The drawing is not bad either (Jack is in the middle).
