Vacaville man airlifted to hospital after bomb explodes in his newspaper

A Vacaville man was airlifted to a hospital on Sunday after a pipe bomb that was hidden in his morning paper exploded, a police spokesman said.

At about 10:20 a.m., Vacaville police received a report of an explosion at Cashel Circle, police spokesman Mark Mazzaferro said.

When officers arrived, they discovered that when a man went out to get his newspaper it exploded.

His condition was not known.

The explosion happened in a cul-de-sac where there are about 15 homes. The residents were taken to a community center.

Travis Air Force Base personnel and bomb-sniffing dogs were brought in, as were Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives personnel and the California Highway Patrol’s bomb squad.

At 1:30 p.m., no other devices had been found, but they were continuing to search the area, Mazzaferro said.
