USF’s Samantha Jehnings wins West Coast Conference player of the week

The 2018 season has started off well for the University of San Francisco women’s soccer program. The Dons are off to their first 2-0 start since 2003, and have the West Coast Conference’s first Women’s Soccer Player of the Week in Samantha Jehnings.

Jehnings, announced as the winner Monday morning, has scored all four of USF’s goals, opening the season scoring a pair in the first two minutes of the first game against Drake. That feat was a program record.

After tearing the ACL in her left knee during her final club game before arriving at USF, Jehnings was named to the WCC All-Freshman team with seven goals in 2015, and tied for third in the conference in game-winning goals. Then, before her a redshirt sophomore season, she tore her right ACL and left meniscus. She sat out a year and returned to start all 20 games in 2017, scoring six goals and adding three assists, with two game-winners. She scored her first goal of that season in the 13th minute of the season opener against New Mexico.

The 5-foot-9 junior midfielder scored the first goal of the 2018 season 48 seconds into the first game, believed to be the fastest goal in the program’s history in a season opener.

On Sunday, the Dons, picked to finish sixth in the WCC, beat Montana Cup tournament host Montana, with Jehnings again scoring two goals in the first half. She got a bit of a late start in that one, though, hitting her first goal in the 19th minute. She quickly followed that up with a header in the 22nd minute.

For the weekend, Jehnings finished with four goals, including two game-winners.  All four of her shots found the back of the net.

The Dons will return home this week for a Friday tilt at Stanford at 8 p.m., and will host Harvard on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. at Negoesco Stadium in San Francisco.
