House Republicans Will Vote on Two Step Deal to Raise Debt Limit

House Republican leaders this afternoon are set to show their rank and file a new plan to raise the debt ceiling by about $2.8 trillion in two installments, with cuts that exceed the increase in the borrowing limit and no new tax increases. According to a top GOP aide, the plan would cut and cap discretionary spending immediately and save $1.2 trillion over ten years. The debt ceiling would be raised by "up to $1 trillion." It would impose caps on future spending that, if exceeded, would trigger automatic cuts across all programs. Read More

Boehner To House GOP: No Deal Yet

Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, just ended a conference call with GOP House members, telling them there is no deal on raising the debt ceiling yet, even as the Asian markets are set to open. He told those on the call that the goal is to find a measure that embodies the principles of the House GOP's "cut, cap and balance" but which can also pass the Senate. Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va., who was also on the call, told those listening that he is seeking "dollar for dollar cuts now" as a down payment for future action to cut the nation's deficit. House Speaker John Boehner held a conference call this afternoon with his rank and file members and told them he wanted a deal on raising the natin's $14.3 trillion debt ceiling by 2 p.m. Sunday in order to avoid rattling the Asian Markets, those familiar with the call said. Boehner told members he is aiming for a deal that encompasses the framework of the GOP's "cut, cap and balance" plan to cap spending, cut the budget by $111 billion and pass a balanced budget amendment. Coburn on deficit plan: 'Everybody gets a pinch'

One of the Senate's staunchest fiscal conservatives put forward his own plan to resolve the debt ceiling crisis and rein in the nation's massive deficit and debt. Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla, released a 600 page document that would cut the deficit by $9 trillion, and he does it through both spending reduction and revenue increases as well as entitlement reform. Boehner rejects Camp David summit with Obama

House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, has nixed the idea of holding debt limit negotiations at Camp David this weekend. President Obama had been considering the change in venue for the talks, which have yielded few agreements and have become more tense and angry in recent days. Reid cancels Libya vote, plans vote on tax resolution

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., abruptly cancelled a vote scheduled for Tuesday on a resolution that would have given approval for the U.S. military involvement in Libya. Reid said despite "broad support" for the resolution, "the most important thing for us to focus on this week is the budget." Reid has scheduled a vote this week on a non-binding bill that would call for millionaires to pay more in taxes. According to GOP aides, the bill can't come up until Thursday, leaving the Senate with little to do until then. Read More

House rejects resolution authorizing Libya mission

The House on Friday rejected a resolution authorizing President Obama to continue military intervention in Libya as part of a NATO operation aiding anti-government rebels. The House voted 295-123 against the continuation of the mission. All but eight Republicans voted against it, along with 70 Democrats. Lawmakers have grown increasingly angered by the Libya operation and have argued that Obama is required by law to seek congressional authorization. Boehner calls on Obama to offer debt limit plan

Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, has issued a statement calling on President Obama to get involved in the debt limit talks that have come to a stalemate. Boehner also said in the statement that the deal cannot include tax increases because such a proposal could not pass in the House. The statement comes in response to one issued Thursday evening by Vice President Joe Biden, who said the deal should include cuts across the budget, closing tax loopholes and sacrifices "that include the most fortunate among us." Huntsman Gets High Profile Endorsement - From Harry Reid

Former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman's presidential candidacy is just hours old but he's already picked up a Democratic endorsement. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said if he had to choose between the two Mormon Republican candidates running for president, he'd pick Jon Huntsman. Rep. Anthony Weiner, D-N.Y., has sent New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announcing his resignation from the state's 9th District seat, effective Tuesday midnight. The short letter was received this afternoon by the House leadership and will be read in the chamber when the House is back in session Tuesday. Weiner finally resigns

Rep. Anthony Weiner, D-N.Y., will resign his seat, Democratic sources confirm to The Washington Examiner. Weiner has been under increasing pressure to step down over lewd pictures and texts he sent to women via social media sites. Weiner on Monday asked for a two-week leave of absence in order to seek rehabilitative treatment of some kind, but the Democratic leadership said that wasn't enough.
