OAKLAND — As right fielder Josh Reddick went hitless in his first three games, his Twitter feed became jammed with superstitious A’s fans asking him to shave his mountain man beard.
The beard’s here to stay, Reddick said Thursday after crushing a two-run home run in the first inning and driving in four runs in Oakland’s 8-2 victory over the Seattle Mariners at the Oakland Coliseum.

Spring training revealed that the 2013 A’s will be much like last season’s division-winning club in at least one respect: There is great depth, and even greater versatility.
Will the A’s ability to run numerous players out at numerous positions, mixing and matching at will, translate into another postseason run? The roster potentially is even better than last year’s, with the additions of Chris Young and Jed Lowrie, but like 2012, the real key for Oakland will be pitching, and the A’s remains a major team strength.

Former West Virginia and Miami Dolphins quarterback Pat White worked out for the 49ers, a league source confirmed Thursday.
Given quarterback Colin Kaepernick’s unique skill set, the need for a backup with a similar ability is pressing.
Enter White, who participated in a private workout at the 49ers’ facility.
The former second-round pick out of West Virginia hasn’t played a in the NFL since 2009, but that didn’t deter 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh from kicking the tires on White.

Warriors guard Stephen Curry scored 35 points in Saturday night’s win over the Washington Wizards, but Golden State’s fourth-year player was forced to leave in the fourth quarter after injuring his right ankle — again.
X-rays were taken after the game, and while they came back negative, Curry’s status for today’s game against the Los Angeles Lakers was in doubt.
On Sunday, Curry left no doubt about his status.

Rolando McClain’s tumultuous run with the Raiders is on the rocks, and likely coming to an end.
McClain was granted permission to seek a trade by the Raiders, the NFL Network reported. The Raiders have turned over more than 33 percent of the roster since Reggie McKenzie was hired as general manager in 2012.
The eighth overall pick in 2010 after an All-American season at Alabama, McClain is expected to be released. Teams are aware the Raiders are ready to part ways with McClain and his $4 million salary in 2013.

NEW ORLEANS — Before embarking on a critical three-game road trip, the Warriors had lost eight of their previous nine games away from home. What a difference a couple of road victories can make with the playoffs in sight.
Stephen Curry scored a game-high 30 points and David Lee added 20 points and 11 rebounds for his 45th double-double of the season as the Warriors buried the New Orleans Hornets 93-72 Monday night for their second road win in as many nights.

The Raiders signed veteran outside linebacker Kevin Burnett, the team announced Sunday.
Burnett started 16 games for the Miami Dolphins last season, when he had 80 tackles, 29 assists and 2½ sacks.
He was recently released by the Dolphins.
The move suggests the Raiders may be thinking about switching to a 3-4 defense, although they have not said they will make that change.
Burnett’s brother, Kaelin, is also a linebacker with the Raiders.

The top-ranked Bulldogs weren’t able to put away ninth-seeded Loyola Marymount until midway through the second half of Saturday’s semifinal, while the No. 23 Gaels needed overtime to beat sixth-seeded San Diego.
Gonzaga won both meetings this season against St. Mary’s, an 83-78 victory on Jan. 10 at St. Mary’s and a 77-60 win a month later in Spokane, Wash.

The 49ers parted ways with six-time Pro Bowl kicker David Akers on Wednesday as they released the 14-year veteran.
“He is a true professional who represented himself and this organization with class. We wish him, and his family, all the best,” 49ers general manager Trent Baalke said in a
statement.
In two seasons with the 49ers, Akers compiled 297 points — the most in the NFL during that span. He made 73 of 94 field-goal attempts and all 78 PATs.

Randy Moss has apparently read the writing on the wall, as he tweeted farewell to the San Francisco 49ers on Saturday."Wished we could've finished the job. Thanks for the opportunity and good luck in the future 9ers," Moss tweeted.Moss is due to become a free agent on March 12. He signed with the 49ers a year ago after sitting out the 2011 NFL season. In his tenure with San Francisco, he had 28 catches for 434 yards and three touchdowns. He also caught seven passes for 112 yards and no touchdowns in the 49ers' playoff run to last month's Super Bowl.

The Warriors are having some trouble on the road against the top of the Eastern Conference, but Stephen Curry has not gotten that memo. The star guard will be looking to follow up a record-setting performance when the Warriors visit the Boston Celtics today.
Curry scored an NBA season-high 54 points and buried a franchise-record 11 3-pointers in a 109-105 loss to the New York Knicks on Wednesday. Curry did everything against the Knicks, handing out seven assists and grabbing six rebounds and three steals.

Former Green Bay Packers and Seattle Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren reportedly has talked to the Raiders about a leadership role with the team.
It was unclear what the position would be, but ESPN.com reported it would include leading the pursuit of a new stadium for the Raiders.
Holmgren is familiar with one member of the Raiders front office: general manager Reggie McKenzie, whom Holmgren worked with while coaching the Packers. Plus, Holmgren knows the Bay Area very well, growing up in San Francisco and working as an assistant for the 49ers from 1986-91.

Scott Sizemore was supposed to be Oakland’s starting third baseman last year. Instead, he had to sit and watch as the A’s had one of the most memorable seasons in franchise history without him.
Sizemore tore his left anterior cruciate ligament on the first day of spring training last year and missed the entire season. This year, he is back, fully healthy — and now locked in a battle for the second base job.
On Sunday, he played in the field in a game for the first time in more than a year, and he made a diving play at second base — no sweat.
