Throughout this school year, San Mateo’s Borel Middle School has hosted a new program designed to snuff out gang problems at their roots. Last week, the board of trustees approved expansion of the program to other middle schools in the San Mateo-Foster City School District. The Gang Resistance Education and Training program — better known as GREAT — is billed as “an immunization against delinquency, youth violence and gang membership.” It consists of 13 class-length sessions on topics ranging from controlling anger to analyzing information and student beliefs about gangs. The Warriors’ offense was not good in their loss to the San Antonio Spurs in Game 6 of the Western Conference semifinals on Tuesday. In past years, that was all previous Warriors teams had to rely on to win games. Marcus Clarke has gotten his fill of living outside the Bay Area and is ready to make his return to San Mateo city government next month. Clarke will end a two-year stint in Detroit to take the job as San Mateo’s economic development manager beginning in June. In March of last year, during a ceremony honoring former Warrior Chris Mullin, team owner Joe Lacob was booed loudly by a crowd dissatisfied with the trade that sent fan-favorite Monta Ellis to the Milwaukee Bucks for Andrew Bogut, who at the time was sidelined with an injury that kept him out of the remainder of that season. In each game since Warriors forward David Lee was sidelined with a hip injury sustained in the team’s first playoff game, coach Mark Jackson has announced a lineup with the expected substitution: Carl Landry starting at power forward.
