S.F. Ballet launches its 2013 season with grace, style

The San Francisco Ballet opened its 2013 season Thursday evening at the City Hall rotunda with “Moving the Compass,” a black-tie gala celebrating the troupe’s 80th anniversary. 49ers to wear red jersey in Super Bowl

The 49ers will wear their red home jerseys for the Super Bowl on Feb. 3 in New Orleans, according to a report by Comcast SportsNet Bay Area. This will mark the fourth time the Niners will wear red in the Super Bowl, doing so previously in 1983, 1988 and 1994 seasons.San Francisco is the designated home team and had the choice of jersey. Giants' Buster Posey among 133 who file for arbitration

Giants catcher Buster Posey, Atlanta Braves outfielder Jason Heyward and Boston Red Sox outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury are among 133 players who have filed for salary arbitration. Chicago Cubs pitcher Matt Garza and Giants outfielder Hunter Pence also are among those who filed Tuesday. Six extra players filed because of a change to baseball’s labor contract: Washington reliever Drew Storen, San Diego shortstop Everth Cabrera, Toronto catcher Josh Thole, Tampa Bay outfielder Sam Fuld, Colorado outfielder Tyler Colvin and Arizona third baseman Chris Johnson. San Francisco Newspaper Co. names Erin Sherbert new online director

Erin Sherbert, who writes on the popular blog The Snitch for SF Weekly, has been named to the newly created position of director of online news for the San Francisco Newspaper Co. Sherbert will oversee digital news content for all three of the company’s publications: The San Francisco Examiner, San Francisco Bay Guardian and SF Weekly. She will help management with the direction, content and evolution of the company’s editorial products. Previously, she was online news editor for SF Weekly and a reporter for The S.F. Examiner. San Francisco Bulls can’t dig out of early hole

The San Francisco Bulls fell behind in the second period and could never recover Sunday during a 4-2 loss to the Bakersfield Condors at the Cow Palace. Bakersfield jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second period on goals from Francis Verreault and Jacob Lagace only 11 seconds apart. The Condors extended their lead to 3-0 on a shorthanded goal by Nicholas Tremblay. San Franciso’s Peter Sivak put the Bulls on the board at 7:50 of the second period and Kris Belan made it 3-2 in the third period, but Lagace put the game on ice with empty-netter at the end. Stern Grove Festival to open with Boz Scaggs, Michael McDonald

The Stern Grove Festival, The City’s wildly popular free outdoor music and performance series, announced today that its 76th season begins June 16 with appearances by Michael McDonald and Boz Scaggs. Before the 2 p.m. show, the organization is hosting The Big Picnic,  a ticketed fundraising event. Some 100,000 people are expected to attend the season’s free concerts in the grove, located at Ninth Avenue and Sloat Boulevard. The full schedule for the series, which continues for 10 consecutive Sundays through Aug. 18, will be announced May 1. Read More

The owner of the San Francisco Examiner and the San Francisco Bay Guardian is acquiring the SF Weekly in a sale designed to preserve and enhance the paper’s role in The City’s media ecosystem. San Francisco Newspaper Co., the Weekly’s new owner, pledged to continue operating the venerable alternative newsweekly as a standalone publication with separate editorial content from the both the Examiner and the Guardian. San Francisco pedestrian plan could include safety outreach, lower speeds

Two weeks after safety advocates questioned the slow pace of The City’s pedestrian action plan, the mayor on Wednesday announced details of a proposal that’s being drafted. The plan, which is expected to be finalized and implemented in early 2013, is one step toward a city goal to reduce serious or fatal pedestrian accidents by 25 percent in 2016 and by 50 percent five years later, Mayor Ed Lee said. San Francisco senior and disability organizations protest outside of Wells Fargo Bank - SLIDESHOW

Two San Francisco organizations that advocate for seniors and the disabled protested outside a Wells Fargo branch at Grant Avenue and Market Street on Tuesday afternoon, causing a hiccup in the bank's daily activities. Senior and Disability Action and the Gray Panthers gathered outside the bank branch at noon, claiming that Wells Fargo is the leader in San Francisco foreclosures -- many of which are happening to senior citizens and those suffering from disabilities. San Francisco Bulls hockey can’t keep pace in San Jose

The San Francisco Bulls had no answer for the Stockton Thunder’s Toni Rajala, who recorded a hat trick to carry the Thunder to a 6-4 ECHL victory on Monday in front of 12,881 hockey-deprived fans at HP Pavilion in San Jose. It was the first taste of pro hockey in the South Bay all season with the NHL stuck in a lockout. Bulls goalie Thomas Heemskerk allowed five of Stockton’s first 20 shots to get by him before he was replaced by Taylor Nelson. Read More

Cal Bears receiver Keenan Allen to declare for NFL draft

Cal wide receiver Keenan Allen will skip his senior season to enter the NFL draft. Allen finishes his career as the school’s all-time leader with 205 receptions. He ranks third with 2,570 yards receiving and seventh with 17 touchdown catches. “I am grateful for all of the opportunities the University of California has provided me over the past three seasons,” Allen said in a statement. “I have always dreamed of having an opportunity to play in the NFL, and my time at Cal has helped me get to the point in my career where I believe I am ready to take that next step.” Read More

Technical problem halts Muni service; woman injured by streetcar in separate incident

Muni trains were halted during the Monday evening commute because of a problem with the system's signals, a transit spokesman said. Underground Metro service was stopped because of electrical problems caused by a transformer that blew near the Van Ness Avenue station about 5:45 p.m., said Muni spokesman Paul Rose. Stranded passengers were being taken by bus shuttles between the Embarcadero and West Portal stations. Crews were working on restoring service, but Rose could not say when trains would be running again. Read More

Arizona State to face Navy at AT&T Park in the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl

It will be a ground vs. air war when the Navy and Arizona State football teams get together for the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl at AT&T Park. Arizona State (7-5) was picked Sunday to play the Midshipmen (7-4) in the annual San Francisco bowl game. The Sun Devils, a familiar team to Bay Area fans as Arizona State plays in the Pac-12 Conference, are coming off a 41-34 victory over rival Arizona, while Navy will wrap up its regular season Saturday against Army at Philadelphia.
