7-year-old, grandmother struck by trash truck in SF

A 7-year-old girl who was struck by a garbage truck Wednesday morning along The Embarcadero suffered a serious foot injury, according to police. The girl and her 66-year-old grandmother were hit about 7:30 a.m. at Broadway and The Embarcadero, police Officer Albie Esparza said. The grandmother suffered abrasions and scrapes to her leg, police said. The driver of the Recology truck involved in the accident stopped at the scene and cooperated with the police investigation, Officer Gordon Shyy said. Read More

A's Adam Rosales goes on DL with strained muscle in ribcage

PHOENIX — The A’s placed infielder Adam Rosales on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday with a strained muscle on the left side of his ribcage. He will miss the early portion of the season for the defending AL West champions, who open the year Monday at home against Felix Hernandez and the Seattle Mariners. Rosales got hurt in Monday’s victory against the Milwaukee Brewers at Phoenix Muni Stadium. He was batting .324 with three home runs and nine RBIs in 21 spring games and also had eight walks for a .468 on-base percentage. Read More

Cal women gets No. 2 seed, draws Fresno State

BERKELEY — After sharing the Pac-12 Conference regular-season title, the Cal women’s basketball team earned a No. 2 seed for the NCAA Tournament and a first-round date with Fresno State. “When you reflect on what on what this team has done, and where this program was years and years ago, I think it’s pretty neat that we’re on that 2-line,” said coach Lindsay Gottlieb, whose Golden Bears were a No. 8 seed the previous year, her first in Berkeley. “But right now our focus is on Fresno State. Stanford will have chance to defend NIT title

While it’s not the NCAA Tournament, the Stanford men’s basketball team will be playing in the postseason, and in a familiar setting. A year after winning the NIT, the Cardinal (18-14) will look to defend their title this time around and earn another trip back to Madison Square Garden. Coach Johnny Dawkins’ squad earned a No. 4 seed in the tournament and will host Stephen F. Stanford, Cal women rake in Pac-12 media awards

The Stanford and Cal women’s basketball teams both finished the regular season ranked in the top 5 in the nation, so it came as no surprise that both were rewarded with Pac-12 Conference media awards Monday. Stanford star Chiney Ogwumike was unanimously voted as the conference’s Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, the conference unveiled. Unbeaten CCSF men's basketball earns top seed in tourney

The City College of San Francisco men’s basketball team was dominant in the regular season en route to racking up a perfect 28-0 record. As a result, the Rams were rewarded with the top seed in the Northern California Regional of the state tournament Monday. CCSF will open tournament play at home on Saturday at 7 p.m. against the winner of a first-round matchup between San Jose City College and De Anza College. 49ers reportedly close to Alex Smith deal

It appears as if Alex Smith’s tenure in San Francisco could be over. But his new destination is still a mystery. CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora tweeted Sunday night that the 49ers have told other teams inquiring that a deal for the quarterback is “effectively complete.” The trade partner is not known, but NFL.com reported that the Kansas City Chiefs, who own the No. 1 overall pick in April’s draft, seem most likely. Any trade can’t be made official until the NFL’s new league season officially begins March 12. Read More
