America’s Cup events to exclude food trucks

Food trucks will not be allowed in the America’s Cup Park or America’s Cup Village during the upcoming international regatta, the San Francisco Business Times reported. The event’s “master concessionaire,” Levy Premium Foodservice, has asked for applications for 27 food and beverage slots and 12 booths, but has specifically excluded food trucks, according to the newspaper. It’s also looking for vendors for a separate 5,000-square-foot sports bar and food and beverage outlet. Read More

San Francisco blasted by strong winds

It’s been a wildly windy few days across California. Northern California was the first to feel the lashing blasts, which spread to the Sacramento and San Joaquin valleys then as far south as San Diego County. San Francisco health care provider On Lok Lifeways receiving grant

On Lok Lifeways
A local health care provider is receiving an $897,240 grant to further strengthen its services to Bay Area seniors. On Lok Lifeways is one of nine California health care organizations included in UnitedHealthcare’s $5.2 million grant to boost services in underserved communities. The award will allow On Lok to strengthen its electronic medical records system, “PACELink,” through software upgrades, new technology investments and improved training. Read More

Anonymous tipster set to receive $250,000 reward for tip in San Francisco homicide case

An anonymous tipster is set to receive a $250,000 reward for his help in solving a seven-year-old homicide. The killing happened April 4, 2006, when Willie Allen, aka Johnny Allen, pictured, was exiting a Fillmore Street store and was attacked by a man with a knife. He died that night. Two years later, then-Mayor Gavin Newsom announced a $250,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of Allen’s killer. Read More

Majority of Americans want pot to be legalized, poll says

A majority of Americans support the legalization of marijuana, according to a recent poll — which in turn means a majority of U.S. polling firms all agree that support for cannabis legalization is at the highest-ever level. Fifty-two percent of Americans polled by the Pew Research Center said they support legalizing the use of marijuana by adults, the firm announced Thursday, while 45 percent of respondents said the drug should remain illegal. Raiders to open preseason at home with the Black Hole

For the second straight year, the Raiders will kick off their preseason schedule with a home game against the Dallas Cowboys. Tony Romo and Co. will invade the Black Hole the week of Aug. 8, with an exact time and date to be announced later. It will be the 29th preseason meeting between the two teams. The Raiders’ other home preseason contest will come the in the third week of preseason action, the week of Aug. 22 against the Chicago Bears. Read More

Protesters stake out their ground as President Barack Obama arrived at San Francisco International Airport on Wednesday evening for a number of Bay Area fundraisers, which are part of a drive to raise money for the 2014 U.S. mid-term elections in which the Democratic Party is trying to regain control of the House. The Walt Disney Co. is shutting down San Francisco-based video game production company LucasArts and laying off staff as it focuses on the less risky, less expensive path of licensing its characters and stories to other developers. The closure comes four months after filmmaker George Lucas, best known as the creator of the “Star Wars” franchise, sold Lucasfilm Ltd. to Disney. LucasArts is part of the Lucasfilm portfolio. Cal’s Allen Crabbe to enter NBA draft

The Cal men’s basketball team is losing one of the top scorers in school history. Cal junior guard Allen Crabbe announced Wednesday that he will forego his senior season and enter the NBA draft. “It has been a dream of mine to play at the next level for a long time and I feel deep down in my heart this is the right decision,” Crabbe said in a statement. “I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Cal and learned a lot from my coaches and teammates. I will miss a lot of people at this University both in basketball and in school. I will always be a Golden Bear at heart.” Read More

Carson Palmer has landed with the third team of his NFL career. First Cincinnati, then the Raiders and now Arizona, it’s not exactly a ‘Who’s Who’ of NFL powerhouses. But Palmer and his new coach insist that he’s coming to a Cardinals team built to win now, despite the fact it lost 11 of its last 12 a season ago. The Arizona Cardinals acquired Palmer from the Raiders, then agreed to a two-year contract that could pay him up to $20 million with $10 million guaranteed. “I’ve got a lot of tread left on my tires,” the 33-year-old quarterback promised.
