A competency hearing for an 80-year-old psychiatrist accused of molesting boys during examinations in the 1990s began Friday and is expected to continue through Wednesday or Thursday, prosecutors said.
William Ayres, a former president of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychology, was returned to San Mateo County in August to stand trial after spending nine months under observation at Napa State Hospital.
Prosecutors allege that doctors and staff there detected signs that Ayres had exaggerated symptoms of dementia in order to appear incompetent.

City College of San Francisco trustees have voted to close a small childcare facility in Bernal Heights and reduce hours at three others in a move to close a major budget gap and save the school's accreditation.
The board also plans to move faculty members out of administrative positions and step up efforts to collect student fees, college spokesman Larry Kamer said. The changes, approved unanimously by the board, could save a total of more than $2.5 million a year, officials estimate.

Authorities are continuing their efforts to identify a girl whose body washed ashore at San Gregorio State Beach in San Mateo County on Sunday afternoon.
The body is that of a white female believed to be between 12 and 16 years old. She was 5-foot-4 and about 108 pounds. She had brown or black hair, Deputy Coroner Roger Fielding said.

About 20 people were evacuated from work Tuesday afternoon when a pungent smell was reported in a building in South San Francisco, a fire marshal said.
Firefighters responded to a report of a strong aroma coming from inside Soonest Express Global Logistics at 228 E. Harris Ave. about noon, South San Francisco Fire Marshal Luis Da Silva said.
About 20 employees were evacuated from the building and two had to be transported to a hospital for respiratory issues, Da Silva said. The two are expected to survive, he said.

A man who was fatally shot in Oakland on Thursday night has been identified by police as 47-year-old Ledell Moss.
Moss, an Oakland resident, was found lying on a sidewalk in the 10700 block of Voltaire Avenue, about a block from the Foothill Square Shopping Center, about 9:10 p.m.

A San Francisco pet owner has joined a national drive urging major chain stores to ban Chinese-made pet treats that campaigners hold responsible for the deaths of hundreds of dogs, a claim the company disputes and federal officials have yet to confirm.

One person was injured Wednesday morning in a crash involving a Muni light-rail vehicle near AT&T Park, a Muni spokesman said.
A pickup truck and a T-Third Street train collided at Third and King streets, spokesman Paul Rose said. Police Officer Gordon Shyy said it appears the truck was turning left from King Street onto Third Street when the collision occurred. A passenger on the train suffered minor injuries, Rose said. The driver of the pickup cooperated with police, Shyy said.

Two lanes of southbound U.S. Highway 101 in San Francisco have reopened after a multi-vehicle crash there blocked all lanes for nearly an hour, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The exact number of involved vehicles has not been determined, however initial reports suggest as many as six or seven vehicles may have crashed there, including a big rig.
An overturned Toyota may have a pregnant woman trapped inside, so first responders are trying to be extra cautious, according to the CHP. The lanes are expected to be blocked for at least 30 minutes.

Nearly two dozen passengers aboard a boat near Alcatraz Island in the San Francisco Bay were rescued when the vessel started sinking Friday night, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
The 22 passengers and crew aboard the Neptune, a 45-foot boat, were safely rescued after the boat struck a shoal near the north side of Alcatraz and started taking on water, according to the USCG.
The Coast Guard received a report at 8:42 p.m. that the Neptune had struck an object and had a 1-foot gash on its side.

American Red Cross volunteers are providing assistance at a four-alarm fire at the Squat and Gobble West Portal restaurant in San Francisco that is still burning this morning.
The fire was reported around 4:40 a.m. at 1 and 9 W. Portal Ave and was not under control as of 9:30 a.m., San Francisco fire officials said.
One firefighter suffered minor smoke inhalation while battling the blaze but did not need to be taken to a hospital, fire Chief Joanne Hayes-White said.

A rescue crew captured one of two sea lions that were spotted entangled in debris at Pier 39 on Tuesday, a Marine Mammal Center spokesman said.
The Marine Mammal Center, based in Sausalito, responded to the “K-Dock,” an area where sea lions congregate on floating wooden platforms, about 12:30 p.m., Marine Mammal Center spokesman Jim Oswald said. He said it appeared the animals had fishing line around their necks.

A group of four suspects robbed a male victim at gunpoint and fired off dry gunshots at the Amsterdam hostel in downtown San Francisco Thursday night, according to police.
Police received reports of an armed robbery at the Amsterdam Hostel at 749 Taylor St. 8:09 p.m., police said.
The victim, a guest at the hostel, told police that he invited two females in their 20s to his hostel bedroom and after leaving, the two females returned to the hostel room with two males in their 20s.
