Electrical panel smoke, fire causes alarm at City Hall

The San Francisco Fire Department responded to reports of smoke in City Hall tonight, a dispatcher said. Firefighters were called to City Hall at 9:26 p.m. on reports of smoke and arrived to find that the building's sprinkler system had been activated. The smoke had come from a problem with an electrical panel, according to fire officials, and PG&E crews were called to the scene. Minimal fire units remain there tonight. Details sought in Halloween shooting as victim recovers

The condition of a Burlingame man injured in a shooting outside a Halloween party at Fort Mason last week has improved, according to police. Now police are searching for photos or video of the Oct. 28 incident, in which 21-year-old Ben Pessah was shot as he was leaving a party with his girlfriend, Carissa Harper, 20, and two other people. Suspect Hun Saelee, 30, of San Leandro allegedly grabbed Harper’s chest and tried to start a fight, Harper said. He eventually grabbed a gun out of the trunk of his car and allegedly shot Pessah in the head as he ran away. Read More

Pair acquitted in attack at Giants game over marijuana

Two women accused of starting a fight at a baseball game that ended with an injury to a 60-year-old woman were acquitted late last week after witnesses gave muddled and conflicting accounts of what happened, according to the San Francisco Public Defender’s Office. A jury on Thursday acquitted San Francisco resident Brianna Chamorro, 19, and San Bruno resident Amber Hanna, 19, after a day of deliberations, according to Chamorro’s defense attorney, Deputy Public Defender Edward Mario. It's time to turn the clocks back an hour this weekend

Everyone will turn their clocks back one hour on Sunday at 2 a.m. for the end of daylight saving time. With that extra hour of sleep Sunday, public safety officials are urging Bay Area residents to check smoke detectors and change batteries on the devices. While changing clocks, fire officials suggest changing the battery on all smoke detectors to keep up with fire safety at home. Fire officials from the San Jose Fire Department said that although Sunday provides a good time for an annual battery change, residents should be testing smoke alarms monthly. Read More

Mission district stabbing critically injures man

A man was critically injured in a stabbing in San Francisco's Mission District on Thursday night, police said Friday. The stabbing was reported at 8:13 p.m. at 21st and Capp streets. The 20-year-old victim was walking in the area when two suspects approached and one stabbed him multiple times in the torso, according to police. The victim was taken to a hospital to be treated for his injuries, which are considered life-threatening. Read More

Counterfeit Giants gear being closed for business

Federal agents in the past week confiscated about 1,200 counterfeit San Francisco Giants T-shirts being sold by illegal street vendors trying to take advantage of the team's World Series run, U.S. Department of Homeland Security officials said today. The shirts, which celebrated the Giants' victory in the National League Championship Series, were taken by plainclothes agents who encountered vendors outside AT&T Park and elsewhere in the city, Assistant Special Agent in Charge Anthony Ho said. Giants victory parade set for Wednesday

San Francisco on Wednesday will hold a ticker-tape parade and civic celebration in honor of the Giants, Mayor Ed Lee announced Sunday. The parade in honor of the Giants’ World Series victory against the Detroit Tigers will start at 11 a.m. at the foot of Market Street and continue to Civic Center Plaza, Lee said. Competency hearing for former child psychiatrist Ayres gets under way

A competency hearing for an 80-year-old psychiatrist accused of molesting boys during examinations in the 1990s began Friday and is expected to continue through Wednesday or Thursday, prosecutors said. William Ayres, a former president of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychology, was returned to San Mateo County in August to stand trial after spending nine months under observation at Napa State Hospital. City College pares spending on several programs

City College of San Francisco trustees have voted to close a small childcare facility in Bernal Heights and reduce hours at three others in a move to close a major budget gap and save the school's accreditation. The board also plans to move faculty members out of administrative positions and step up efforts to collect student fees, college spokesman Larry Kamer said. Peninsula officials trying to ID girl’s body that washed ashore Sunday

Authorities are continuing their efforts to identify a girl whose body washed ashore at San Gregorio State Beach in San Mateo County on Sunday afternoon. The body is that of a white female believed to be between 12 and 16 years old. She was 5-foot-4 and about 108 pounds. She had brown or black hair, Deputy Coroner Roger Fielding said. Read More

Workplace evacuated and two hospitalized due to pungent smell in South San Francisco

About 20 people were evacuated from work Tuesday afternoon when a pungent smell was reported in a building in South San Francisco, a fire marshal said. Firefighters responded to a report of a strong aroma coming from inside Soonest Express Global Logistics at 228 E. Harris Ave. about noon, South San Francisco Fire Marshal Luis Da Silva said. About 20 employees were evacuated from the building and two had to be transported to a hospital for respiratory issues, Da Silva said. The two are expected to survive, he said. Read More

A man who was fatally shot in Oakland on Thursday night has been identified by police as 47-year-old Ledell Moss. Moss, an Oakland resident, was found lying on a sidewalk in the 10700 block of Voltaire Avenue, about a block from the Foothill Square Shopping Center, about 9:10 p.m. No arrests have been made in the case. Pet owners unite behind dog treats they claim are causing illness, death

A San Francisco pet owner has joined a national drive urging major chain stores to ban Chinese-made pet treats that campaigners hold responsible for the deaths of hundreds of dogs, a claim the company disputes and federal officials have yet to confirm.
