Pedestrian hit, killed by truck in S.F.

A man was struck and killed by a truck on Market Street on Monday afternoon. The collision was reported about 2:30 p.m. at Market and Beale streets, police spokesman Officer Carlos Manfredi said. The truck driver reportedly stopped and cooperated with investigators.A witness at the scene who declined to give his name said that as he was waiting to cross the street, he saw the truck hit the victim as the victim crossed Beale Street in a crosswalk. Peaceful protesters shut down Bayview bank in name of homeownership

A group of protesters who said they are fighting to protect homeowners shut down a bank Thursday morning in the Bayview district. The roughly 25 protesters shut down the Wells Fargo branch at 3801 Third St. about 11 a.m. as part of a day of action organized by the Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and Occupy Bernal. A tree fell onto a home in San Francisco's Russian Hill neighborhood this morning, a fire department spokeswoman said. The incident was reported at 7:23 a.m. on Lurmont Terrace, a small street just south of the famed crooked part of Lombard Street, fire spokeswoman Mindy Talmadge said. Click on the photo to see more. Man shot outside Mission District liquor store

A man was shot while standing in front of a liquor store in San Francisco's Mission District early this morning, police said. The shooting was reported at 12:58 a.m. near 24th and Shotwell streets. The victim was approached by a suspect in his early 20s who shot him in the torso and then fled in a black vehicle, according to police. The victim was taken to a hospital to be treated for his injuries, which are not considered life-threatening, police said. Read More

Work continues to shore up Daly City hillside where water main burst

Crews in Daly City continue to shore up a hillside where a water main broke two weeks ago, sending thousands of gallons of water and mud onto nearby streets. City Manager Patricia Martel said about $497,000 has so far been spent to replace more than 5,000 cubic yards of soil and natural vegetation near Hillside Park, where the pipe burst early Nov. 13. Rain clouds are storming toward San Francisco Bay Area

A series of powerful rainstorms is expected to hit the Bay Area beginning Wednesday morning, dumping up to 8 inches of rain on parts of the region, a National Weather Service forecaster said. The storms will start around the time of the morning commute Wednesday and continue through the weekend, bringing winds of 40 to 50 mph and 1 to 3 inches of rain to most parts of the Bay Area, forecaster Steve Anderson said. “This is certainly the biggest storm of the season so far,” Anderson said. “Typically, we get our big rain events in December and January.” Read More

Winter homeless shelters open up across San Francisco

As the temperature drops, a number of winter shelters throughout the Bay Area are opening up to accommodate homeless people, keeping them safe on cold and rainy nights. The San Francisco Interfaith Council offers shelter services throughout the winter. St. Mark’s Lutheran Church at 1031 Franklin St. opened Sunday, serving as many as 65 people daily and providing dinner and breakfast. The shelter closes Dec. 8. A reputed Oakland gang member who skipped a court appearance in September is now back in custody after an off-duty Oakland officer spotted him at an upscale San Francisco steakhouse on Thursday, police said. Activists adopt a legal strategy to derail San Francisco’s proposed nudist ban

A group of nudists filed a lawsuit Wednesday in federal court seeking to stop the Board of Supervisors from passing an ordinance next week that would ban nudity in The City. The supervisors are set to vote Tuesday on a proposal by Supervisor Scott Wiener that would prohibit the display of genitals or buttocks in city plazas or parklets. Electrical panel smoke, fire causes alarm at City Hall

The San Francisco Fire Department responded to reports of smoke in City Hall tonight, a dispatcher said. Firefighters were called to City Hall at 9:26 p.m. on reports of smoke and arrived to find that the building's sprinkler system had been activated. The smoke had come from a problem with an electrical panel, according to fire officials, and PG&E crews were called to the scene. Minimal fire units remain there tonight. Any fire was handled by the sprinklers, according to the Fire Department. Read More

Details sought in Halloween shooting as victim recovers

The condition of a Burlingame man injured in a shooting outside a Halloween party at Fort Mason last week has improved, according to police. Now police are searching for photos or video of the Oct. 28 incident, in which 21-year-old Ben Pessah was shot as he was leaving a party with his girlfriend, Carissa Harper, 20, and two other people. Suspect Hun Saelee, 30, of San Leandro allegedly grabbed Harper’s chest and tried to start a fight, Harper said. He eventually grabbed a gun out of the trunk of his car and allegedly shot Pessah in the head as he ran away. Read More

Pair acquitted in attack at Giants game over marijuana

Two women accused of starting a fight at a baseball game that ended with an injury to a 60-year-old woman were acquitted late last week after witnesses gave muddled and conflicting accounts of what happened, according to the San Francisco Public Defender’s Office. A jury on Thursday acquitted San Francisco resident Brianna Chamorro, 19, and San Bruno resident Amber Hanna, 19, after a day of deliberations, according to Chamorro’s defense attorney, Deputy Public Defender Edward Mario.
