The 24th Street BART station in San Francisco is closed this evening after a person was hit by a train there, BART officials said. BART officials announced major delays due to a medical emergency followed by station closures shortly before 10 p.m. The person's condition is unknown and it is unclear how long the station will remain closed. San Mateo County gun buyback event nets hundreds of firearms

A gun buyback that took place in San Mateo County on Saturday has been deemed a success by one of its organizers, U.S. Rep. Jackie Speier. An estimated 250 firearms were collected at the buyback event, which was held at the South San Francisco courthouse, according to the office of the Peninsula Democrat. Organizers paid more than $23,000 in exchange for the unwanted firearms — $100 for every handgun and $200 for rifles and assault weapons. Read More

Steve Young, George Seifert join 49ers’ bid to host 50th Super Bowl

The San Francisco 49ers will make a bid next month to host the 50th Super Bowl in 2016, and announced today that they are bringing in a couple of stars from the franchise's illustrious history to help out. Former quarterback Steve Young and coach George Seifert are joining the San Francisco Bay Area regional bid committee to host Super Bowl L at the 49ers' new stadium in Santa Clara, which opens next year. Name of man crushed in elevator released, family still sought

A month after a transient was crushed to death in a grisly incident on top of a San Francisco train station elevator, the medical examiner's office has released the man's name and are asking for the public's help in finding his family. The man has been identified as 42-year-old David Thomas, according to Dr. Amy Hart, San Francisco's chief medical examiner. Thomas was found dead on the night of March 10 in an elevator shaft at the Montgomery BART and Municipal Railway station. Read More

SF General Hospital briefly locked down after gun scare

Employees at San Francisco General Hospital were ordered to shelter in place for nearly an hour this afternoon because of a report of a gunman near the hospital, police and hospital officials said. Three people have been detained in connection with the incident, which began at about 1:45 p.m. when officers saw a man possibly armed with a handgun near Building 80/90 at the hospital campus at Potrero Avenue and 22nd Street, police spokesman Officer Albie Esparza said. Home burglary suspect flees in Peninsula thefts

San Mateo and Hillsborough police located and then lost a burglary suspect who was interrupted at one San Mateo home Friday and might have cased other homes in Hillsborough, according to police. San Mateo police were called to a home in the 600 block of Edgewood Road about 12:20 p.m. for a reported interrupted burglary. The suspects were already gone when police arrived, but around the same time Hillsborough police intercepted and pursued a white Chevy Malibu speeding onto northbound Interstate 280. Stolen taxicab leads SF police on high-speed chase; driver escapes

A taxicab was stolen near San Francisco State University early Friday morning and the suspect then led authorities on a pursuit to Pacifica and back, a San Francisco police spokesman said. The cab was parked at Denslowe and Banbury drives around 1:15 a.m. when the driver got out to help a sick passenger, police spokesman Officer Gordon Shyy said. Field office set up to help residents affected by water main break

A special office opened Tuesday to help residents affected by a massive water main break in February in the area of 15th Avenue and Wawona Street in West Portal. The field office, located at 383 West Portal Ave., will connect residents to services offered by the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission, the City Attorney’s Office, the Department of Building Inspection and other agencies. The office is intended to help the residents of the 23 homes that were flooded when a water main broke early Feb. 27. About a dozen cars also were damaged. Read More

College student shot and killed in Mission district Saturday

A college student visiting family during his spring break was killed in an apparent gang-related shooting in San Francisco’s Mission district early Saturday morning, a police spokesman said.Around 3 a.m., the 19-year-old man was walking with a friend near the intersection of 24th and Bryant streets when a car approached. A man exited the car, asked the teen if he was involved in a gang and shot him in his upper body, police spokesman Officer Albie Esparza said. Read More

Tenderloin mural raises awareness of miliary veteran suicides

Military veterns who have been working on a mural in a Tenderloin alleyway altered it recently to highlight the increasing problem of suicide among former soldiers. In Shannon Alley, which is located near Geary and Taylor streets, there are dozens of murals painted by various veterans as part of a project started in 2011 by Amos Gregory, a veteran from the Gulf War era. Crews were filming the pilot for a TV series starring Minnie Driver and David Walton in various San Francisco neighborhoods this week, a San Francisco Film Commission coordinator said. Filming wrapped up Wednesday for the pilot episode of NBC's "About a Boy" directed by Jon Favreau. Shooting was done in front of iconic San Francisco homes in the North of Panhandle area and in scenic spots along the waterfront over the past few days, film coordinator Lauren Machado said. Glen Park station reopens after man gets struck, killed by BART train

UPDATE: San Francisco's Glen Park BART station has reopened about two hours after a person was fatally struck by a train there, BART officials said. The person was struck around 4 p.m. at the station, located at 2901 Diamond St., BART spokeswoman Alicia Trost said. Medical personnel responded and pronounced the person dead at the scene minutes later, Trost said. Authorities are investigating the incident. Read More

Suspicious fire in Bayview causes $2.75 million in damages, displaces 30 people

A suspicious fire in San Francisco's Bayview District early this morning caused an estimated $2.75 million in damage to three buildings and displaced 30 people from the neighborhood, authorities said. The four-alarm blaze was reported at 12:53 a.m. at a two-story home at 1644 McKinnon Ave. near Third Street and spread to two other buildings. Fire department spokeswoman Mindy Talmadge said the fire brought down live power lines and caused a gas leak that fueled the flames, which continued to burn until 4:19 a.m. Read More
