The San Francisco Zoo welcomed the first giant anteater born at the zoo in a decade on Dec. 22, zoo officials said.The 2-year-old mother is a first-time mom. The father, 12-year-old Angelo, also fathered the zoo’s last giant anteater, born in 2001.The new baby will ride on its mother’s back for about one year.Adult anteaters can grow up to 8 feet long, not including their tail, according to the zoo.Wild anteaters can eat up to 30,000 ants per day, zoo officials said.

A man was stabbed outside a nightclub in San Francisco's South of Market district early this morning and another man has been arrested in the attack, a police spokesman said.
The stabbing was reported at about 1:45 a.m. near the intersection of Fourth and Brannan streets, San Francisco police Lt. Troy Dangerfield said.
Some sort of physical altercation occurred between two 25-year-old men outside a nearby nightclub, Dangerfield said.
One of the men brandished a knife and stabbed the other man multiple times, he said.

A 20-year-old man suffered life-threatening injuries in a shooting in San Francisco's Mission Dolores neighborhood on Friday night, a police spokesman said today.
The shooting was reported at 10:58 p.m. Friday at the intersection of 20th and Dolores streets, San Francisco police Lt. Troy Dangerfield said.
The victim was standing on a corner of the intersection when a suspect approached and shot him multiple times before fleeing on foot, Dangerfield said.
The victim was taken to San Francisco General Hospital with life-threatening injuries, he said.

Oakland Mayor Jean Quan said she wants to improve the city's image, bring more shoppers to town, and visit China to court more business for the port.
In a briefing with reporters on Thursday, her fourth day in her new post, Quan was optimistic about Oakland's future, even though she admitted it faces crime and budget problems.

South San Francisco police are searching for suspects wanted in connection with a robbery at a Bank of the West on Friday, a police corporal said.At around 10:25 a.m., police were called to the bank located at 2288 Westborough Blvd., police Cpl. Elena Brennan said.Police were initially told that there were possibly two or three armed suspects inside the bank, and about six employees and two customers inside as well, Brennan said.Upon arrival, officers were unable to make contact with anyone inside the bank, Brennan said.

San Francisco police are investigating a frightening drive-by shooting in the Bayview-Hunters Point neighborhood Thursday evening that left a 22-year-old woman’s car riddled with bullets.Police spokesman Lt. Troy Dangerfield said the woman, a city resident, was driving north on Ingalls Street near George Court at about 6:50 p.m. when someone inside a gold sedan driving in the opposite direction opened fire.Dangerfield said the woman heard gunshots and saw a muzzle flash, and later found four bullet holes in her car.
