UCSF opens new high-tech learning center at its Parnassus campus

The University of California at San Francisco today opened a simulation learning center that school officials say is one of the first of its kind in the nation.The Teaching and Learning Center, located on the second floor of the UCSF library on its Parnassus campus, will serve 2,500 students in the school's dentistry, medicine, nursing and pharmacy programs, all of which rank among the top four nationwide in their fields. San Francisco police today identified the man suspected of opening fire inside a Tenderloin coffee shop and killing a man as 29-year-old Jodie Daniels. The shooting took place at about 4:20 p.m. Thursday inside Jebena Coffee and Tea Co. at 990 Polk St.Police said Daniels, of El Cerrito, chased Terry Turner, also 29, into the cafe, cornered him inside a back room, and shot him several times in the abdomen and head. Turner, a San Francisco resident, was pronounced dead at the scene. Read More

A man was shot after getting off a San Francisco Municipal Railway bus in The City’s Mission district Tuesday morning, a police spokesman said.The shooting was reported at about 9:40 a.m. at the intersection of 16th and Folsom streets, San Francisco police Lt. Troy Dangerfield said.Two men, ages 22 and 18, had gotten off a Muni bus and were on the southwest corner of the intersection when they were approached by three suspects who opened fire, Dangerfield said. Youth Speaks hosts a spoken word event to honor MLK day

Man hides inside Redwood City CVS, robs store after closing

Police are trying to identify a man who hid inside a Redwood City CVS pharmacy on Sunday and robbed it at gunpoint as employees closed the store for the day.The robbery was reported at the CVS at 1301 Broadway at 10:18 p.m.Employees were in the process of closing the store when a man wearing a black jacket and black cargo pants emerged and ordered them to the floor at gunpoint, police said. He then took an undisclosed amount of cash and ran away. The man is described as black, 6 feet to 6 feet 2 inches tall, weighing about 220 pounds. Read More

Bay Area train ride to celebrate MLK is one of the last in the nation

The Bay Area's Freedom Train is now one of the last in the country.
Bay Area residents coming out to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. day will enjoy a historic commute on Monday, thanks to Caltrain's 27th annual Freedom Train ride. The Martin Luther King Jr. Association of Santa Clara has teamed up with Caltrain to host the commemorative ride. Freedom Train rides started in the Bay Area in the early 1980s as a way for residents to memorialize King's historic march in Alabama, from Selma to Montgomery, in 1965. Read More

Bicyclist struck and injured in Mission

A bicyclist was struck by a vehicle and injured Sunday morning, police said.
A bicyclist was injured Sunday morning when he was hit by a vehicle in San Francisco's Mission District, police said. Officers responded to a report of a vehicle that crashed into a bicycle at the intersection of Duboce and Mission streets at around 9:45 a.m., San Francisco police Sgt. Michael Andraychak said. A 30-year-old woman from San Francisco was driving a Toyota sedan through the intersection when she struck a 24-year-old man on a bike, Andraychak said. The victim was taken to a hospital and is expected to survive his injuries. Read More

The San Francisco Giants will be featured on a new Showtime reality series chronicling the 2010 World Series champs’ off-season, spring training and 2011 regular season, Major League Baseball and the cable network announced Friday.The series “will give viewers a front-row seat into the lives of the players, coaches and team personnel as they begin the arduous task of defending their World Series title,” a statement said.The show is currently in production, and a name is still in the works. North Beach power outage affects hundreds

About 365 homes and businesses in San Francisco’s North Beach neighborhood lost power Thursday morning when an underground power cable failed, a PG&E spokesman said.Power was knocked out to PG&E customers in the area of the 500 block of Broadway at about 9:20 a.m., PG&E spokesman Joe Molica said.The number of affected customers was reduced to 164 at 11 a.m., but crews are having difficulty restoring power because they can’t access a vault that’s been flooded with rainwater, Molica said. Two hand-painted glass panels, each 16 feet high and 150 feet across, have been installed on the facade of San Francisco International Airport’s new Terminal 2.The artwork was conceived by Seattle-based artist Norie Sato, who took photographs of cloud formations from an airplane and recreated the images on 240 rectangular sections of double-layered glass that comprise the massive panels. Man charged with murder in Haight-Ashbury skateboard beating

San Francisco prosecutors today filed murder charges against a man suspected of beating another man to death with a skateboard in the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood early Christmas morning.Donald Tanksley, 60, was found severely wounded in the 1400 block of Haight Street, at Masonic Avenue, at about 12:45 a.m. on Dec. 25.Prosecutors said Tanksley had a fractured skull.
