Businesses in the San Francisco Bayview district were warned Thursday that they should report crimes to the Police Department during Chinese New Year celebrations next month.
"The only way we can ensure a safe community is for everyone to have thorough conversations," District 10 Supervisor Malia Cohen said.
San Francisco politicians at the event wished everyone a happy and safe Chinese New Year, or lunar New Year, which begins Feb. 3. The holiday is expected to attract many shoppers and potentially criminals to city streets, authorities said.

The nonprofit co-founder who was slain outside Hillsdale Shopping Center in San Mateo will be honored Thursday during the 17th anniversary of the group.
David Lewis, 54, co-founded the East Palo Alto nonprofit Free at Last that provides services including substance abuse treatment and transitional housing.

A man who gained local fame by scaling a San Francisco luxury residential tower in September is fighting three misdemeanor charges in a trial that started Thursday morning.
Dan Goodwin, also known as "SpiderDan," used suction cups to climb up the side of the Millennium Tower in The City's South of Market neighborhood.
Goodwin was arrested after reaching a 59th floor balcony on top of the building. He was charged with being a public nuisance, trespassing, and delaying or obstructing arrest, and has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

As part of the San Francisco Unified School District's "Respect Week," students at A.P. Giannini Middle School are being asked to show off their pearly whites.

A University of California at San Francisco medical student who was killed at a South of Market nightclub earlier this month has saved lives as an organ donor, San Francisco General Hospital officials said Thursday.
Joe Hernandez, 30, was found unconscious on the floor of the Temple nightclub on Howard Street early the morning of Jan. 9.
He had apparently been hit in the head with an object. Doctors were unable to save him, and he was put on life support for several days until his organs could be donated.

Police are asking for the public's help in identifying the suspects in a fatal shooting atop San Francisco's Twin Peaks early Saturday morning.
Luis Venegas, 23, was with a group of friends in a parking lot at Christmas Tree Point, a scenic overlook, when a verbal dispute with a nearby group escalated into gunfire at about 3:20 a.m., police said.
Venegas was shot several times and died at the scene, San Francisco police Sgt. Michael Andraychak said Saturday.

Police are trying to identify a man who hid inside a Redwood City CVS pharmacy on Sunday and robbed it at gunpoint as employees closed the store for the day.The robbery was reported at the CVS at 1301 Broadway at 10:18 p.m.Employees were in the process of closing the store when a man wearing a black jacket and black cargo pants emerged and ordered them to the floor at gunpoint, police said. He then took an undisclosed amount of cash and ran away. The man is described as black, 6 feet to 6 feet 2 inches tall, weighing about 220 pounds.

Bay Area residents coming out to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. day will enjoy a historic commute on Monday, thanks to Caltrain's 27th annual Freedom Train ride.
The Martin Luther King Jr. Association of Santa Clara has teamed up with Caltrain to host the commemorative ride.
Freedom Train rides started in the Bay Area in the early 1980s as a way for residents to memorialize King's historic march in Alabama, from Selma to Montgomery, in 1965.
