Students at San Francisco's Cleveland Elementary School will experience a blast from the past this morning when a time capsule from 100 years ago is opened.The time capsule was hidden in a "keystone area" of the school, located at 455 Athens St., when the building was first completed in 1910, San Francisco Unified School District spokeswoman Heidi Anderson said.

A San Francisco man who allegedly stole hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of artworks from local galleries and stashed them inside his Tenderloin residential hotel room was sentenced to probation Wednesday.
Terry Helbing was arrested on June 1, 2010, after allegedly swiping 40 paintings and prints estimated at $15,000 from the San Francisco Botanical Garden's horticulture library. Police later found a trove of other artworks inside Helbing's residence in the 400 block of Ellis Street.

A fatal stabbing in the Lower Haight neighborhood during a fight last week has been deemed self-defense, keeping the alleged stabber from facing criminal charges.
The man, who has not been identified, was allegedly assaulted by Anthony Jones, 53, at about 10:50 a.m. Friday in the 500 block of Page Street, police said.
Police said the man stabbed Jones, a San Francisco resident, after Jones attacked him with a shovel.

A man was injured in a shooting in San Francisco’s Bayview District on Tuesday night, police said Wednesday.The shooting was reported at about 10:35 p.m. near the intersection of Jennings Street and Palou Avenue.The 20-year-old victim was walking when he heard a pop, felt pain in his shoulder and realized he had been shot, according to police. He ran to a friend’s house and was taken to San Francisco General Hospital with injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening, police said.

A man fatally shot early Tuesday morning in San Francisco’s Bayview district was identified today by the Medical Examiner’s Office as 19-year-old Robert O’Bryant.O’Bryant and another man were found shot in the interior hallway of a multifamily home in the 1600 block of Kirkwood Avenue at about 1:30 a.m., police spokesman Lt. The shooting of a 9-year-old boy in the stomach in San Francisco’s Western Addition neighborhood on Saturday has been determined to be accidental, although details of the event are still unclear, a police spokesman said. The shooting was reported around noon Saturday in the 1100 block of Turk Street, San Francisco police Officer Albie Esparza said.Officers arrived to find the 9-year-old boy suffering from a gunshot wound to his lower abdomen, Esparza said.

A judge Tuesday sentenced a San Francisco man to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murder of a police officer he struck and killed during a car chase in 2006.
San Francisco police Officer Nick-Tomasito Birco, 39, was in his patrol car when he was hit by a stolen van driven by Steven Petrilli on July 26, 2006.
Petrilli and two other men had committed four robberies in The City that night and were fleeing from police, according to prosecutors.

Caltrans crews have finished excavation work on two tunnels on the San Mateo County coast that will allow motorists to bypass Devil’s Slide on state Highway 1 beginning next year.More than 314,000 cubic yards of soil, clay and rock has been removed during excavation of the two tunnels, which run beneath San Pedro Mountain just south of Pacifica, Caltrans District 4 Director Bijan Sartipi said.The tunnels are each 30 feet wide and about 4,200 feet long.Crews are continuing to work on installing electrical systems, insulation and lining on the inner tunnel walls.

The San Francisco Department of Public Works is performing maintenance on the Great Highway today, work that was supposed to have started Monday, a spokesman said.The department was scheduled to begin a weeklong maintenance project Monday morning, but the work was postponed until 9 a.m. today.Great Highway will be closed to vehicle traffic between Lincoln Way and Sloat Boulevard from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for one week.Workers will be trimming back vegetation from the medians to improve visibility and will be removing sand from the roadway.

A Southern California surfer who nearly drowned in the ocean off of Half Moon Bay on Saturday remained in critical condition this afternoon, a hospital spokeswoman said.Jacob Trette was airlifted to Stanford University Medical Center after he was caught in the surf by a 20-foot wave at Mavericks at about 10 a.m., Coastside Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Ari Delay said.Trette has been listed in critical condition since Saturday, when good Samaritans pulled him from the water and brought him to shore, Stanford Hospital spokeswoman Liat Kobza said.

The West Contra Costa Unified School District has agreed to pay $4 million to settle a lawsuit filed on behalf of a teenage girl who was beaten and gang raped outside Richmond High School's homecoming dance in October 2009, an attorney for the school district confirmed today.The school district signed the settlement in November, but didn't release specifics about the terms of the agreement because of concerns for the safety of the victim and her family, said Pleasant Hill attorney Timothy Murphy, who represented the school district in the civil case.
