Sex offender found living in illegal structure in Menlo Park

Police arrested a convicted sex offender who had been on the run for years.
A man who evaded police for more than seven years after he was convicted of sexual assault in San Mateo County was arrested Wednesday in Menlo Park, where he was living in an illegal structure in a backyard, police said Thursday. Detectives from a narcotics enforcement team went to a home in the 1200 block of Sevier Road at around 2:30 p.m. on a complaint of a building code violation, Menlo Park police Detective Ed Soares said. San Francisco police on Thursday named the suspect they are seeking in the shooting of two men, one fatally, early Tuesday in the Bayview District. Police said Johnathan Walker, 20, is believed responsible for the shooting of 19-year-old Robert O'Bryant and another man inside a home in the 1600 block of Kirkwood Avenue. O'Bryant and another man, approximately the same age, were found shot in the interior hallway of a multi-family home at about 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, according to police. Read More

Ross police are searching Golden Gate Park in San Francisco on Thursday for missing Terra Linda High School teacher Debra Schmitt. Schmitt, 53, was last seen Jan. 19 in Ross. She failed to report to work the next day when the words “thank you everyone” were found written on a blackboard in her classroom, police said. Police searched trails in the Phoenix Lake area and in Ross itself Wednesday, Sgt. Gianfranco Campa said this morning. Terry Helbing was arrested on June 1, 2010, after allegedly swiping 40 paintings and prints estimated at $15,000 from the San Francisco Botanical Garden's horticulture library. A fatal stabbing in the Lower Haight neighborhood during a fight last week has been deemed self-defense, keeping the alleged stabber from facing criminal charges. The man, who has not been identified, was allegedly assaulted by Anthony Jones, 53, at about 10:50 a.m. Friday in the 500 block of Page Street, police said. A man was injured in a shooting in San Francisco’s Bayview District on Tuesday night, police said Wednesday.The shooting was reported at about 10:35 p.m. near the intersection of Jennings Street and Palou Avenue.The 20-year-old victim was walking when he heard a pop, felt pain in his shoulder and realized he had been shot, according to police.
