The dead body of a Terra Linda High School teacher was found Saturday afternoon, possibly in her backyard in Ross, according to police.
Debra Schmitt, 53, was found dead at about 3:30 p.m. this afternoon, possibly in the backyard of her home in Ross, said a police officer who didn't want to be named.
Schmitt was considered missing after she failed to show up to class the morning of Jan. 20 at Terra Linda High School at 320 Nova Albion Way in San Rafael.

An armed man was shot and killed by officers Saturday morning in Oakland, a police spokeswoman said.
The Oakland Police Department received a call at about 9:35 a.m. that a man was armed in the 5500 block of Taft Avenue, spokeswoman Holly Joshi said.
When officers arrived he was still armed with a weapon.
The man didn't comply and police shot and killed him, she said.

Ten people have been charged with conspiracy, pimping, pandering and human trafficking for allegedly running a prostitution ring in three counties, a spokeswoman for the Alameda County District Attorney's Office said Friday.
The charges stem from a year-long, multi-agency investigation that culminated last week with search and arrest warrants being carried out at 10 locations in Alameda, Contra Costa and Santa Clara counties on Thursday to break up the alleged ring.

An alleged MS-13 gang member accused in the 2008 fatal shootings of a San Francisco father and two of his sons is expected to go on trial for murder in late June, prosecutors said Friday.
Edwin Ramos, 24, of El Sobrante, was arrested three days after the June 22, 2008, slayings of Tony Bologna, 48, and his sons Michael, 20, and Matthew, 16.
Assistant District Attorney Harry Dorfman said today that with pretrial motions planned for May, jury selection in Ramos' trial could begin in June, and opening statements could begin later that month.

A man who evaded police for more than seven years after he was convicted of sexual assault in San Mateo County was arrested Wednesday in Menlo Park, where he was living in an illegal structure in a backyard, police said Thursday.
Detectives from a narcotics enforcement team went to a home in the 1200 block of Sevier Road at around 2:30 p.m. on a complaint of a building code violation, Menlo Park police Detective Ed Soares said.
Officers found several occupants living in an illegal structure behind the home, Soares said.

San Francisco police on Thursday named the suspect they are seeking in the shooting of two men, one fatally, early Tuesday in the Bayview District.
Police said Johnathan Walker, 20, is believed responsible for the shooting of 19-year-old Robert O'Bryant and another man inside a home in the 1600 block of Kirkwood Avenue.
O'Bryant and another man, approximately the same age, were found shot in the interior hallway of a multi-family home at about 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, according to police.

Ross police are searching Golden Gate Park in San Francisco on Thursday for missing Terra Linda High School teacher Debra Schmitt.
Schmitt, 53, was last seen Jan. 19 in Ross. She failed to report to work the next day when the words “thank you everyone” were found written on a blackboard in her classroom, police said.
Police searched trails in the Phoenix Lake area and in Ross itself Wednesday, Sgt. Gianfranco Campa said this morning.
The search by plainclothes officers and distribution of fliers in Golden Gate Park will be low-key, Campa said.
