Demolition kicks off rebirth of St. Anthony’s dining hall

Demolition began Tuesday at the original St. Anthony’s Dining Room, which is being razed in order to construct a new facility in its place. The dining room, located at 45 Jones St. in the Tenderloin, has served an estimated 38 million meals to low-income and homeless people since opening in 1950. It closed in February to make way for construction on the organization’s new dining room, set to open in summer 2014. Read More

Dumbarton Bridge reopens one day early

The Dumbarton Bridge opened ahead of schedule Monday after officials originally planned to reopen it early this morning following construction work to bring the span up to seismic code. The bridge closed late Friday night so a state-of-the-art  seismic joint on the eastern side of the main deck could be installed, Caltrans said. The joint will raise the deck 5 inches and allow it to move 42 inches — 22 inches more than the old joint allowed — in the event of an earthquake. New barriers also were installed. Read More

Man killed in Golden Gate Park motorcycle crash

A motorcyclist was killed in a solo crash in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park Saturday night, police said. The crash was reported at 9:40 p.m. Saturday and involved a motorcyclist and a light pole near the intersection of Kezar and Martin Luther King drives in Golden Gate Park, according to police. Police said the motorcyclist, identified only as a white man in his 30s, was pronounced dead at the scene. An investigation into the collision is underway, and no further details were immediately available. Read More

Visitacion Valley burst pipe raises questions

San Francisco city officials threw a party at a school gym in Visitacion Valley last Saturday to celebrate a return to normalcy after a yearlong sewer project wrapped up on Sunnydale Avenue. Lousy meth cook attacks buyer

A man was zapped with a stun gun and stabbed in the arm on Sixth Street early Tuesday morning during a fight over the quality of the methamphetamine he had just purchased, police said. The stabbing was reported shortly after midnight in the first block of Sixth Street. The victim, a man in his early 50s, had purchased the drug from the suspect, then later confronted him after being unsatisfied with it, according to police. The argument turned physical, and the suspect used a stun gun on the victim and stabbed him in the arm, police said. Read More

Noe Valley fire ousts residents

A two-alarm fire that burned two buildings in Noe Valley on Monday afternoon was extinguished in about 50 minutes, a Fire Department spokeswoman said. The blaze was reported about 2:35 p.m. on the top floor of a three-story building at 276 Jersey St., then spread to a second building, Fire Department Lt. Mindy Talmadge said. Firefighters responded and extinguished the fire by 3:22 p.m., Talmadge said. The blaze affected four units at the two buildings. The American Red Cross is assisting the displaced residents, Talmadge said. Read More

Pollutants still leaking after Chevron fire

Smog-producing hydrocarbons are still leaking at unlawful levels at the Chevron oil refinery in Richmond in the wake of the Aug. 6 fire there, but pollution control officials said they expect to stop it by today and Chevron could face $25,000 daily fines. “The leak has been isolated and will stop as soon as tomorrow,” said Dan Tillema, an investigator of chemical incidents for the U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board, during a public briefing about government inquiries into the refinery fire held Monday morning at the Richmond City Council chamber. The Golden State Warriors on Sunday announced the architecture team chosen to design a new sports and entertainment complex in San Francisco for the team. Novato woman jumps from Richmond-San Rafael Bridge in early morning pursuit

A 30-year-old Novato woman jumped from the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge into San Francisco Bay during a vehicle pursuit early this morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.Officers spotted a Ford Focus weaving on southbound U.S. Highway 101 in San Rafael at about 2 a.m., the CHP said.The officers tried to pull the vehicle over, and it initially stopped at a traffic light at Bellam Boulevard. Then without warning, the vehicle accelerated across Bellam Boulevard and onto the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge. Read More

San Francisco 49ers release It Gets Better video

The San Francisco 49ers want fans to know "it gets better" with an online video released Friday that supports gay youth as part of a national project to stop anti-gay bullying -- the first such video to be created by an NFL team. Two killed in blaze still unidentified

It could take weeks to identify the two elderly men who died in a fire at a debris-filled home in the Excelsior district Aug. 17, the Medical Examiner’s Office said Thursday. The fire was reported at 3:34 a.m. in a two-story home at 171 Vienna St. The men died in separate bedrooms on the second floor. Authorities have not been able to reach family members to help identify the men and may have to rely on DNA testing, Medical Examiner’s Office officials said. Five rescued after rowboat overturns near Candlestick Point

Five people were rescued from the water near Candlestick Point on Saturday after a rowboat capsized, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.Two 12-year-olds were rowing near the point around 5 p.m. when their 5-foot boat began taking on water and sinking, Coast Guard spokesperson Mike Lutz said. Three adults on shore who saw the incident waded out to assist, but then were unable to get back to shore themselves. The San Francisco Fire Department and U.S. Coast Guard responded to the scene, and a Coast Guard 47-foot motor lifeboat was able to pull all five to safety. Read More

Sex offender who escaped from San Mateo mental health facility found panhandling in S.F.

The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office has released more information about finding an accused sex offender Saturday morning in San Francisco who had earlier escaped from a mental health facility in unincorporated Redwood City.Derrick Sanders, 34, was reported missing from the Cordilleras Mental Health Facility at 200 Edmonds Road around 4 a.m. Friday, said San Mateo County sheriff’s Lt. Larry Schumaker.Sanders appears to have made his escape through an elevator shaft. Read More

Two in custody, one injured in Bayview district shooting

Two people have been taken into custody in connection with a shooting that occurred Saturday afternoon in San Francisco’s Bayview district. The 18-year-old male victim was shot twice on the corner of Third Street and Gilman Avenue around 3:45 p.m. by two suspects, according to police. The suspects were seen fleeing into a home on the 1000 block of Fitzgerald Avenue, and police immediately surrounded the house. Read More

A parolee with a history of violence and sex offenses escaped early Friday morning from a mental health facility in unincorporated Redwood City, according to the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office.
