University of California medical center workers in San Francisco and several other cities statewide began a two-day strike Tuesday.
The strike, organized by American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 3299, started at medical facilities at UC San Francisco, UC Davis, UCLA, UC Irvine and UC San Diego, union officials said.
Employees represented by AFSCME include respiratory therapists, nursing aides, radiologists, MRI technologists and various technicians, according to the union.

Following the recent violence in East Palo Alto, culminating in Sunday’s killing of a teenager, police Chief Ronald Davis is calling a “crime emergency” for the department, which took effect Tuesday.
Declaring a “crime emergency” allows the department to cancel days off and make assignment changes as needed. It will more than double the number of patrol officers in the field during critical time periods, Capt. Carl Estelle said Monday.

An urban search-and-rescue team based in Menlo Park is ready to respond to Moore, Okla., where crews continue to search for survivors of a deadly tornado that struck Monday.
California Task Force 3 Urban Search and Rescue Team Program Director Tim Campbell said the 80-person force is standing by should the call come in from the Federal Emergency Management Agency that more rescue resources are needed to search for victims in the coming days.

Young people in San Mateo County can get around at a huge discount this summer with the SamTrans Summer Youth Pass.
The $40 pass gives riders ages 17 and younger unlimited access to SamTrans bus service from June 1 through Aug. 31, according to SamTrans officials. The bus system includes dozens of routes throughout San Mateo County and into San Francisco and Palo Alto.

A teenager who was shot and killed in East Palo Alto on Sunday night has been identified by the San Mateo County coroner’s office as 15-year-old Jose Quinonez.
Police responded to a ShotSpotter activation in the 2800 block of Fordham Street at about 11 p.m. Upon arrival, officers found three teenage boys with gunshot wounds, police said.
Quinonez, an East Palo Alto resident, was found with multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.

President Barack Obama is returning to the Bay Area in a couple of weeks to raise money for his Democratic colleagues in the U.S. Senate, according to party officials.
Obama will be attending fundraising events on June 6 in Palo Alto and Portola Valley on behalf of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.
The president’s trip will include a 5 p.m. reception at the Palo Alto home of tech entrepreneurs Marci and Mike McCue, according to an invitation for the event.

Starting in July, San Francisco customers will pay their water bills once a month instead of on the current bi-monthly schedule, a San Francisco Public Utilities Commission spokesman said.
Charges for water and sewer services will be switched to a monthly billing cycle to allow for easier budgeting and quicker leak detection, SFPUC spokesman Tyrone Jue said.
“By doing a monthly billing cycle (customers) will see if they have a leak a lot sooner,” Jue said. “Within a month you can see if there is a spike in your usage.”

Two men who apparently were Golden State Warriors fans were killed after the basketball team's playoff game Thursday night when a gunman opened fire on their Porsche on Interstate Highway 880 in Oakland, authorities said.
The victims were traveling north on Highway 880 in the slow lane near the Jackson Street exit when someone in a dark-colored SUV fired several shots into their car at 10:36 p.m. Thursday, California Highway Patrol spokesman Sam Morgan said.

A group involved in a scuffle with San Francisco State University police Thursday night was part of a squatter's collective that was evicted from an abandoned church in the city earlier this week, according to a statement from a member of the group.
An SFSU police officer was injured and several people were arrested in the confrontation Thursday night when police sought to remove alleged trespassers from a dormitory, according to a university spokeswoman.

After years of legal wrangling, Dr. William Ayres, an 81-year-old former San Mateo psychiatrist accused of molesting boys during examinations in the 1990s, admitted to the charges against him Thursday.
A wheelchair-bound Ayres pleaded no contest to eight felony molestation charges just four days into jury selection in his second trial in San Mateo County Superior Court. His first trial ended in a hung jury and a mistrial in 2009.

Police are investigating a fatal shooting in San Francisco's Bayview District this afternoon.
Officers responded at 3:43 p.m. to reports that a male victim had been shot in the 1100 block of Hudson Avenue, Officer Carlos Manfredi said.
The officers performed CPR on the victim until medics arrived and transported him to San Francisco General Hospital.
However, the victim succumbed to his injuries at the hospital, Manfredi said.

A Peninsula fire chief who leads a task force of a nationally recognized search and rescue team is recovering from back surgery after falling at his San Jose home over the weekend.
Menlo Park Fire Protection District Chief Harold Schapelhouman was injured when he fell while doing yard work at his home Saturday, a fire dispatcher said.
Schapelhouman underwent an 11-hour surgery on Monday and “came through it well,” the dispatcher said.

South San Francisco police are hunting for a person who smashed the window of a car and lit it on fire early Tuesday morning.
Witnesses say that just after midnight a person wearing a black hoodie and a mask used a brick to smash the window before throwing a lit container with flammable liquid inside, police said. The suspect then fled in a white four-door sedan.
The fire in a neighborhood near U.S. Highway 101 and Sister Cities Boulevard did not injure anyone.

A Woodside man who is on trial for allegedly murdering his wife to cash in on $30 million worth of insurance money admitted he faced financial ruin in the days before her death.
Pooroushash “Peter” Parineh, 67, took the witness stand Monday in his own defense in San Mateo County Superior Court.
Parineh said his real estate holdings before 2007 were worth an estimated $150 million, but by early 2010, they were worth only a few million dollars.
Five properties — including the family home in an exclusive neighborhood in Woodside — were in foreclosure, Parineh said.
