Unemployment agency spends $14,000 on superhero capes for jobless

Florida authorities are investigating an unemployment agency that spent $14,000 of public money on 6,000 bright-red superhero capes for the jobless. The capes were part of Workforce Central Florida’s “Cape-A-Bility Challenge” public relations campaign featuring a cartoon supervillain, “Dr. Evil Unemployment,” who must be vanquished. State unemployment director Cynthia Lorenzo said the spending appeared to be “insensitive and wasteful.” The agency defended their program as “part of a greater effort to connect with the community.”
