Uber driver takes wrong turn, gets stuck on Safeway stairs

An Uber vehicle took a wrong turn in San Francisco Monday afternoon, and ended up stuck on a short stairwell at a Safeway store at Church and Market streets.

The driver had two passengers in the car and was on his way to pick up a third, according to an Uber spokesperson. He was using the “Uber Pool” function, which allows multiple riders with similar destinations to chip in for a ride together.

An Uber spokesperson said the company is looking into the incident. They added they’re relieved no one was injured, and are reaching out to parties involved.

The stairwell connects the Safeway parking lot to the sidewalk along Market Street.

The San Francisco Police Department said an investigation is ongoing, and it is unclear if the Uber driver would be cited. No injuries were reported, according to the SFPD.

After the incident, a tow truck driver attempted to pull the white sedan off of the stairwell, but the cable connecting it to the tow truck snapped and the car slid forward into a city trash can, knocking it off its bolts and into Market Street.

The Uber vehicle came to rest when it hit a city fire hydrant.
