A truck driver who tried and failed to beat a train crossing the tracks escaped serious injury in a crash north of the San Bruno Caltrain station Wednesday morning.

The train struck the rear panel of the truck about 8:30 a.m. No injuries were reported.

“The back of the truck was pretty messed up,” Caltrain spokesman Jonah Weinberg said.

Southbound train traffic was delayed for about an hour while the train was taken out of service, Weinberg said. Safety equipment at the crossing was working, but the driver had partially crossed the tracks and didn’t have enough room to clear the train, Weinberg said.

Later in the morning, in South San Francisco, a SamTrans bus driver was sent to the hospital with neck pain after a 16-year-old driver was distracted by a pet and sideswiped the bus, according to SamTrans.

The bus passengers and 16-year-old pickup driver weren’t injured in the wreck, said Weinberg, also a spokesman for SamTrans.

“He was distracted by a pet in his car and nearly hit three elderly women in a car, but swerved and sideswiped the bus,” Weinberg said.

Bus passengers boarded the next scheduled bus and resumed their trip after the 11:40 a.m. accident near Fairway Drive on West Orange Avenue, officials said.

A damage estimate wasn’t available Wednesday.
