As soon as Cal lost to Oregon State 62-14 on the road on Saturday to complete a 3-9 season, its worst in 11 years, the question of coach Jeff Tedford’s future became the No. 1 issue. Bridgford may get chance on big stage for Cal

Allan Bridgford prepares each week as if he is the starting quarterback for Cal. The difference this week is he could likely get that chance for the Golden Bears against No. 2 Oregon because starter Zach Maynard is hampered by an injured left knee. Cal was sliding into oblivion with a 1-4 record when it produced its best game of the season in a 43-17 victory over UCLA on Oct. 6. For the second straight week, Cal outplayed a ranked opponent in the third quarter on the road to get back into the game. But for the second straight week, the Golden Bears were unable to make it pay off in a victory, losing to USC 27-9 on Saturday.
