WBC whiffs trying to connect with Americans

With every crack of the bat at the World Baseball Classic final on Tuesday, one thought reappeared in my head: I can’t wait for real baseball to start. I could smell the hot dogs, hear the ball hit the mitt, but if Hanley Ramirez wasn’t at the plate getting showered by a chorus of boos, AT&T Park lacked the tension, the drama, the electricity of Giants baseball. Dominican Republic playing against Puerto Rico in WBC championship game tonight

The Dominican Republic’s offense only came to life for one inning, but their four-run fifth was enough to propel them to the World Baseball Classic’s championship game with a 4-1 win over the Netherlands at AT&T Park on Monday. The victory put the Dominicans one win away from going undefeated during the 2013 tournament, with Puerto Rico waiting and hoping to spoil that streak tonight. Read More

San Francisco is indisputably a Giants town. But Sunday night, baseball fans took over the Orange and Black’s territory for a semifinal game in the World Baseball Classic. Though the Giants didn’t take the field, fan favorite Angel Pagan and his Puerto Rico team helped bring fans to AT&T Park weeks before Opening Day. “I’m a baseball fan,” said Manny Lopez, 48, of San Francisco. “I’ve been late to work for the Little League World Series.” Read More

AT&T Park isn’t going to ‘show favorites’ while hosting WBC finale

In its 13-year history, AT&T Park has already played host to three World Series, an All-Star Game, an annual college bowl game and countless concerts and events. Starting today, the park some think is the best in the business will add another event to its résumé when the World Baseball Classic comes to the shores of McCovey Cove. The Giants’ organization is not taking its experience for granted, however, as the WBC will carry a unique feel with it to The City. Read More

Spring training irrelevant, unless you're Tim Lincecum

San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Tim Lincecum
Spring training results don’t mean anything, right? Sure, except when there aren’t any results at all. Not in the 0-for-4 sense, mind you. Or the five-earned-runs-in-two-plus-innings sense, either. No, we’re talking as in no results, period, sense. As in not playing. Read More
