The trial of a homeless, wheelchair-bound man with mental health issues who earlier this year stabbed a police officer after being pepper-sprayed began Wednesday.

A wheelchair-bound man was assaulted during a heartless robbery attempt in the Tenderloin on Sunday morning, police said.The 60-year-old victim was ruthlessly beaten after trying to wheel away from the robber at Eddy and Taylor streets around 7:35 a.m.A 31-year-old man was arrested at the scene shortly after the assault.
