Westmoor boys’ basketball coach Herb Yaptinchay doesn’t know the last time the Rams defeated a West Catholic Athletic League opponent — because it may have never happened before.
If it has, it hasn’t happened in a very long time.
That all changed Tuesday night at St. Ignatius when the Rams, only five years removed from a 1-20 season, orchestrated the first huge upset of the season with a 75-74 overtime win over the Wildcats.

The Peninsula Athletic League will be highlighted at the Central Coast Section Track and Field Finals on Friday at Gilroy High School by Westmoor’s Andria Donley and Burlingame’s Allison Daley.
Daley, who went to the state championships last year, was the top qualifier in CCS for the 300-meter hurdles after winning at the PAL Championships.
“Anybody who gets race experience really helps,” Burlingame coach Megan Fish said. “She’s used to big competition.”

With the Peninsula Athletic League Track and Field Championships beginning Wednesday, the field is wide open, but the Westmoor High School boys and girls track teams lead the pack, and despite losing some stellar runners from last year, the Rams continue to find ways to win.
Westmoor was left without an elite runner after last season when Central Coast Section runner John Paul Williams graduated. But that put more emphasis on “team” and the Rams have responded.

In the Dr. Martin Luther King Classic at Terra Nova High School, University High School succumbed to Westmoor High School’s up-tempo style in a 60-47 defeat on Monday.
Kathleen Ocampo led Westmoor (10-5) with 15 points and teammate Erin Joo added 13 as the Rams blew the game open against University (8-7).
