When it comes to the Bay Counties League, that champion is University.
With the Urban High School crowd revved up for its biggest boys’ basketball game since 2004, Chris Mah and University outlasted Urban 62-56 at Kezar Pavilion.

The Urban High School boys’ basketball team has been an afterthought in recent memory, but with the coaching of Joe Skiffer and the play of juniors Nate Cohen and Matt Monges, the Blues are making some noise in the Bay Counties League West.
Led by Cohen’s 18 points and 10 rebounds, and Monges’ game-high 20 points, Urban defeated host Lick-Wilmerding for the second time this season 52-42 in BCL West play Tuesday.

Last season, it took the Urban High School girls’ basketball team 10 games to get its first win.
This season, it only took one.
Led by seniors Carly Kuperschmid and Jenna Waldman, who scored 14 points apiece, the Blues defeated visiting Fremont Christian 60-24 in their season opener Monday at Kezar Pavilion.
After last year’s struggles and finishing with only five wins, coach Hope Broadus said the game showed that her team was ready for a new season.

Just looking at the benches, it is clear the Balboa High School and Urban School boys’ volleyball programs are at different stages of development.
The Buccaneers, just a year removed from their first Academic Athletic Association championship in 2009, had a packed bench of 10 players, while Urban, in just its third year of varsity competition, featured two.
