Even though Kevin Hogan grew up the son of a lobbyist and attended high school six blocks from the Capitol building, nobody had to do any politicking for him to be Stanford’s starting quarterback.

Killing time in a Las Vegas hotel room, a 21-year-old quarterback for Fresno State suddenly remembered his pal Kevin Moen was playing.
“I was just waiting for our game,” Jeff Tedford said, who on Nov. 20, 1982, was preparing for UNLV, “and I wanted to see what Kevin was doing.”
From his TV set, Tedford saw that Moen and Cal were down 20-19 to their then-Pac-10 Conference Bay Area rival Stanford, with a mere four seconds left to play.

Whether Stanford’s offense and quarterback Josh Nunes have progressed as far as their showing against Arizona would suggest will be tested when the No. 17 Cardinal (4-1) plays No. 7 Notre Dame (5-0) on the road Saturday.
Rolling up 617 yards and 54 points at home against Arizona’s mediocre, injury-plagued defense was one thing, but moving the ball successfully and scoring against Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind., is an entirely different challenge.

The second-year coach stood behind redshirt junior Josh Nunes on Tuesday, delivering an unprompted and unscripted message at the beginning of his weekly news conference that his struggling quarterback will start for the No. 18 Cardinal (3-1, 1-1 Pac-12) against Arizona (3-2, 0-2) on Saturday.
