As the temperature drops, a number of winter shelters throughout the Bay Area are opening up to accommodate homeless people, keeping them safe on cold and rainy nights.
The San Francisco Interfaith Council offers shelter services throughout the winter.
St. Mark’s Lutheran Church at 1031 Franklin St. opened Sunday, serving as many as 65 people daily and providing dinner and breakfast. The shelter closes Dec. 8. Service runs from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.

A 5,300-pound bell that survived the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and is worth an estimated $75,000 was stolen last weekend by recycling thieves probably hoping to scrap it for about $10,000.
The theft of this historic bell from St. Mary’s Cathedral is just the latest in a rash of alarming metal thefts across The City. The Police Department recently launched a special investigations unit specifically to combat such thefts.

A 2-ton historic church bell was stolen from St. Mary’s Cathedral on Geary Boulevard, police said Monday.

No one knows for certain when the bell was stolen from the garden. The theft was reported last weekend.
"Nobody can swear on a stack of Bibles when they last saw the bell," San Francisco police Inspector Brian Danker said.
