One of college football’s longest-running rivalries is in for a big change in 2012, and neither of the participants are thrilled with the end result.
The Pac-12 Conference unveiled its football schedule for next season on Wednesday, and Cal and Stanford will meet on Oct. 20 in Berkeley. Traditionally, the Big Game has always been held in mid- to late November, toward the end of both teams’ schedules.

Cal alumni angered by the planned loss of baseball have targeted Title IX, but their wrath is misplaced. It should be directed at chancellor Robert Birgeneau and athletic director Sandy Barbour. Whether they were dissembling or just hadn’t done the math, they misled alumni who contributed to keep their favorite sports.Title IX is a good thing. In place since 1972, it gives women opportunities to play sports that hadn’t existed.
