SF city attorney sues Monster Beverage over marketing

 San Francisco's city attorney is suing Monster Beverage for marketing its energy drinks to children, saying the products pose severe health risks. City Attorney Dennis Herrera said Monday that Monster is the "industry's worst offender" in the extent to which it targets youth and children. The action comes after Monster last week sued Herrera over his demands that company reduce caffeine levels in its drinks and stop marketing to minors. Read More

The many fans of Charlie the death row dog were overjoyed with an agreement that will spare the pooch’s life. Charlie, an American Staffordshire terrier, attacked a U.S. Park Patrol officer and horse in an off-leash area of Crissy Field in August. After Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of false imprisonment in connection with an argument he had with his wife, Mayor Ed Lee suspended him and brought charges to remove him for official misconduct. A video of the wife of suspended Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi was again the subject of a legal battle Tuesday as his suspension proceedings move forward haltingly. The City Attorney’s Office is seeking to use a video of Eliana Lopez, who was taped by a neighbor Jan. 1 crying and pointing to a bruise on her arm that she said was caused when Mirkarimi grabbed her during an argument the previous day. San Francisco city attorney sues health insurers

City Attorney Dennis Herrera announced Wednesday he is suing three health insurers for a “scheme” to underpay San Francisco General Hospital and other public hospitals in the state for emergency services. The lawsuit, filed in San Francisco Superior Court, alleges Blue Cross of California, Anthem Blue Cross Life and Health Insurance Co., and Health Net have not reimbursed the hospital fully for treatment of patients covered by those insurers.
