Don’t be misled by the three good games pitched by Giants starters this week. Two of them were by the two reliable starters, Matt Cain and Madison Bumgarner. Beyond them, the rotation is still a problem. And now, after his one good outing of the season, Ryan Vogelsong is out because of an injury to his right hand when he was trying to hit. Can anybody please explain why the National League owners continue to resist adding the designated hitter?

The Giants put Ryan Vogelsong on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday and prepared to be without their right-hander for two months in yet another challenge for their struggling starting rotation.
Vogelsong had surgery Tuesday morning at Stanford, one day after breaking his pitching hand while at the plate. The expected recovery time is 4-6 weeks, but Vogelsong likely would need a rehab assignment before rejoining the Giants.
