Motorists should brace for significantly higher prices at the pump in the coming weeks as a result of Monday night’s fire at the Chevron oil refinery in Richmond. Wholesale prices for fuel have already risen by 23 to 35 cents a gallon, a cost increase that will soon be passed on to consumers, said Cynthia Harris, a spokeswoman for AAA. As East Bay residents recovered Tuesday from the effects of a massive fire at the Chevron refinery in Richmond on Monday night, the head of emergency services at the facility provided updates on the blaze. Mark Ayers said a hydrocarbon leak was initially detected in the No. 4 crude unit about 4:30 p.m. Monday. He said the leak was minor. When asked why Chevron didn’t notify county health officials, Ayers said there were “no thoughts it would impact the community.” Read More

On Tuesday, Chevron sought to repair the core of its Richmond refinery after an hourslong fire burned Monday night in the crude unit. The blaze sent a pitch-black plume of smoke high above the East Bay, burning for more than four hours before being completely extinguished overnight, Chevron said.
