A’s back with new set of expectations

Josh Reddick
Center fielder Coco Crisp strutted back into the Bay Area with puffed-up hair and a retro-style beard. Red-headed right fielder Josh Reddick slicked back his locks and added even more inches to his bushy beard as part of an ongoing competition. General manager Billy Beane still had his hair combed clean but picked “a terrible time,” he said, for a sun spot to be removed from his nose. The A’s are back, and with plenty of new looks. The Raiders overcame another injury to running back Darren McFadden and a record-setting performance by Doug Martin to put the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on the brink of an epic collapse. One mistake by Carson Palmer ended all that. Read More

A’s run a true Hollywood story

What was once a statement that would be mocked and chided has now become inevitable: The A’s will make the playoffs in 2012. Yes, it’s hardly official with 16 games left and a tough 10-game road trip facing the A’s. But entering today’s game against the Detroit Tigers, Oakland owns a 1½-game edge over the Baltimore Orioles for the top wild-card spot and, more importantly, a 4½-game lead on the Los Angeles Angels for the all-important second wild-card berth. Challenging path awaits A’s

Would you bet against the hottest team in baseball down the stretch? With 28 games left to play, the A’s are tied with the New York Yankees for the second-best record in the American League (76-58) despite an 8-3 loss to the Los Angeles Angels at the Oakland Coliseum on Monday. Oakland taps Hanson to fill CB spot

The Raiders finished sweeping out the cornerback position Monday when they signed unrestricted free agent Joselio Hanson and waived 2011 third-round draft pick DeMarcus Van Dyke. Oakland has six cornerbacks on its 53-man roster and none of them were with the organization last season. The starters are Ron Bartell and Shawntae Spencer, and also on the roster are Pat Lee, and recent waiver claims Phillip Adams and Coye Francois. Read More

New era for the Oakland Raiders

If you’ve listened, you’ve heard it. “Get better.” It’s the mantra that Raiders coach Dennis Allen has preached during minicamps and throughout the preseason, and one he hopes will be heeded once regular play starts. “The biggest thing when you go to camp is, when you end camp, you want to be better than you were when you started camp,” Allen said. “And that’s the only reason why we do this is to get better. So I think we’ve done that. Read More

New Raiders era begins today on national stage

The Raiders didn’t have much to boast about last year. The Silver and Black went winless in preseason, failed to make the playoffs for the ninth consecutive year, and became claimants to the record of the most penalized team within an NFL season. Rookie coach Dennis Allen — the youngest head coach in the league — is fixated on changing that. Read More

A's young bullpen keeping pace with rotation

The A’s just might be the best story in baseball right now. A club picked to finish last in the division by most experts is 14-2 in July after beating the New York Yankees in four consecutive games at the Coliseum — and winning each game by one run, including Sunday’s 5-4 win in 12 innings. In fact, the A’s have won five one-run games in a row for the first time in franchise history, which started in 1901. Read More
