Former Cal swimmer Dana Vollmer ended 12 years of frustration on Tuesday when she won the women’s 100-meter butterfly at the U.S. Olympic swimming trials to book her place on the team for London.
Although Vollmer won a relay gold medal at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, the 24-year-old had never qualified in an individual event despite three previous attempts.

Jordyn Wieber, a likely gymnastic darling at the London Games, and John Orozco will capture much of the spotlight this week as they vie with 28 other hopefuls for 10 Olympic spots up for grabs at the U.S. gymnastic trials in the South Bay.
The 16-year-old Wieber, who won the world all-around women’s title in Tokyo last year, signalled she is close to her best by claiming her second consecutive U.S. all-around title this month in St. Louis.
