The extended family of a California Highway Patrol officer who was shot Tuesday morning on southbound Interstate 680 after a traffic stop was notified in the evening that the officer is in critical condition at a Walnut Creek hospital, a CHP spokeswoman said.
The officer, a seven-year veteran of the department out of the Contra Costa County area, was struck in a shootout about 8:30 a.m. in the Alamo area that left a suspect dead, CHP Sgt. Diana McDermott said.
