Powerful Santa Ana winds have died down across Southern California, and forecasters say a new weather system from the west could bring some relief from bone-dry conditions.

Strong, gusty Santa Ana winds lashed parts of Southern California Saturday, bringing extremely dry conditions and raising the risk of wildfires in the region.
The National Weather Service issued high wind warnings for Los Angeles, Ventura, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties through late afternoon.

Santa Ana winds swept through parts of Southern California on Friday, closing a state college campus as a high-pressure system brought continuing hot, dry weather and extreme fire danger.
California State University, San Bernardino, stopped classes at midmorning as a precaution, affecting some 17,000 students, spokesman Joe Gutierrez said.
"We've had wind damage in the past where it knocked down a tree or a limb," he said.
