The “world’s greatest fisherman” has been pinched in a king-size crab scandal.
Dennis Sturgell, 60, whom the San Francisco Chronicle once dubbed the “world’s greatest fisherman” in a 2008 article, is facing charges of unlawful fishing in connection with an incident in San Francisco last fall in which he allegedly possessed more than 54,000 pounds of Dungeness crab.

The start of crab season went off without a hitch this year, bringing Dungeness from the ocean floor to the dinner table sooner than in the 2011 season.
“We got what we were asking for,” said Larry Collins, president of the San Francisco Crab Boat Owners Association. “We had no problems. It was nice having an easy year.”

A pricing dispute between crab boat owners and purchasers will keep the local crustaceans off Thanksgiving tables this year.
Boats haven’t left the San Francisco, Half Moon Bay or Bodega Bay docks since the official season opened last week, and they likely won’t until buyers meet the $2.50 per pound price sought by crabbers. Purchasers say they won’t pay more than $2 per pound for Dungeness.
