This year, the U.S. Supreme Court rejected Robert Fairbank’s appeal of his death sentence for the 1985 rape and murder of college student Wendy Cheek.
With that rejection, Fairbank joined at least 13 other death row inmates who have completed the decadeslong capital punishment appeals process and are eligible for execution.

I am writing to encourage voters to vote for Proposition 34, which will remove the death penalty from the state Constitution and substitute a penalty of life without the possibility of parole, for several reasons.

Death row inmate Scott Peterson, who was sentenced to be executed for murdering his wife and unborn son 10 years ago, has asked the California Supreme Court in San Francisco to overturn his conviction.
Lawyers for Peterson, 39, of Modesto, filed the appeal Thursday in the first step in the lengthy death penalty appeals process in California.
If Peterson loses in the state high court, he can continue appeals in the federal court system.

California pretends to have a death penalty for murder and other heinous crimes. That is, judges and juries sentence violent felons to die in San Quentin State Prison’s execution chamber.
But that is just a pretense because, in fact, almost no one is ever executed.
Instead, supposedly about 700 condemned inmates reside for years, even decades, on what’s called “death row.” They’re in greater danger of dying of old age — or boredom — than in taking the long walk.
