STANFORD — Stanford is referred to as “Tight End U” these days because of the steady stream of NFL picks the football team has churned out at that position in recent years. But when the Cardinal set out to defend their Rose Bowl championship in the fall, they’ll be featuring a pair of fresh faces in their double-tight end set. STANFORD — David Shaw’s latest recruiting class is short on numbers and marquee names. If the past has shown anything, though, that might not matter much. After a 14-point flourish to start the game, the Stanford offense went stagnant in the 99th Rose Bowl against Wisconsin. But the Cardinal leaned on its most reliable commodity to secure its first Rose Bowl victory since 1972. The Stanford defense, which came into the game as the third-best in the nation at stopping the run, held the Big Ten Conference champions scoreless and to 82 yards of total offense in the second half to seal a 20-14 win. Stanford Cardinal gets ready in SoCal for Rose Bowl

Wisconsin is in the Rose Bowl for the third straight year. This time, the Badgers are bringing a familiar face with them on the sideline. Athletic director Barry Alvarez, who won three Rose Bowls during his coaching career in Madison, Wis., is handling coaching duties for the 99th Rose Bowl on Tuesday following the departure of Bret Bielema for Arkansas. The diagram David Shaw has for the future of Stanford football is on a simple sheet of paper resting on the coach’s desk. The itinerary for this week: Wednesday at Palo Alto High School. Thursday in Ohio. Friday in New Jersey and Saturday at the Virginia state championship game. On Tuesday, assistants hit Northern California, Southern California, Houston, Louisiana and Ohio. Coach David Shaw building his own legacy at Stanford

The day David Shaw became Stanford’s coach almost two years ago, he said he never wanted to interview for another football job again. He walked out of his first news conference and up to his new office, where he spent about 90 minutes reflecting with his father, Willie Shaw, who had lost out on the same position to Bill Walsh two decades prior. “There was a tear or two shed in there,” Willie Shaw said.
