San Francisco’s sidewalks are receiving an upgrade that is removing concrete and replacing it with community gardens.
The program, run by Friends of the Urban Forest in partnership with the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission, will help remove “excess” concrete and improve drainage during storms, as well as beautify neighborhoods.

A man was struck in the head with the sporting equipment late Wednesday during a vicious brawl with a fellow tenant of an apartment building in Chinatown, police said.
Nicholas Vrataro, 25, was arrested after the 11:20 p.m. brawl in a building in the 1100 block of Stockton Street, near Chinese Hospital.

A woman was attacked with ice cream before her cellphone was pilfered in downtown San Francisco on Saturday, police said.
The 23-year-old victim was in the 800 block of Market Street about 9:15 p.m. when a man and woman, aged 18 to 20, hit her with the ice cream, police said.
The victim confronted the cold crooks and put her cellphone on a table. The male thief grabbed the phone and the duo fled on foot. There have been no arrests.

Muni is exploring new options for retrieving tunneling equipment in or near North Beach, including one that could save the agency $23 million while keeping the machinery underground indefinitely.
As part of its $1.6 billion Central Subway project, which will extend underground Metro service from South of Market to Chinatown, Muni wants to extract a tunnel-boring machine through Columbus Avenue. Preparation for that process began this year and will be finished by Thanksgiving 2013.
