A meathead assaulted the employee of a Safeway on Noriega Street while trying to shoplift an uncooked chicken on Friday, police said Monday.The 58-year-old female shoplifter tried to leave the supermarket without paying for the poultry around 4 p.m. The 25-year-old store employee grabbed the chicken from the suspect, but the crook became irate, attacked her, then fled on foot with the chicken.

For two decades, Modesto-based Raymond Young Poultry has been a fixture at the Heart of the City Farmers’ Market at UN Plaza, selling live chickens for food. But in recent years, animal-rights activists also have become fixtures at the popular downtown bazaar.
The controversy: Activists object to the treatment of the chickens. The protesters allege the fowl live in their own filth, are packed tightly into cages and are stuffed into paper or plastic grocery bags for customers.

More than 34,000 pounds of chicken were delivered to the San Francisco Food Bank this morning to help feed hungry families in the city, according to the organization.
The donation was part of the food bank's annual Hunger Challenge in which each participant lives on $4 per day -- equal to the amount in a food stamp budget -- for one week.
The chicken, donated by Tyson Foods, arrived at the food bank's Pennsylvania Avenue headquarters around 11 a.m.
