There’s been considerable hand-wringing in public circles of late over census figures that show San Francisco is losing families and children faster than a runaway Muni train.
Supervisor Mark Farrell called for a hearing on the matter last week, saying they need to bring together all the organizations that deal with things like education and housing and see what is triggering the family flight.

Census data released this week reveal that the number of men age 30 to 34 living in San Francisco has declined by nearly 15 percent over the last decade, from 48,510 to 41,351. Women of that age group have also declined in population, but by less than 5 percent.

Daly City officials believe the 2010 census undercounted their population by more than 7,000, which could cost the city hundreds of thousands of dollars or more in state and federal funding.Although the census put Daly City’s population at 101,123, City Manager Patricia Martel said the actual number is closer to 108,383. Martel bases her claim on a 2010 estimate by the state Department of Finance.

What: India’s latest census showed 914 girls under age 6 for every 1,000 boys — a trend that continues declining and is widely recognized as being caused by sheer neglect of female infants in many homes.

Despite efforts to stem the tide of family flight, the population of children in San Francisco continues to ebb. Families that remain in The City are bucking the trend that has plagued San Francisco for years as the number of children — defined as people up to 17 years old — has dropped from 181,532 in 1960 to 107,524 today, according to the latest U.S. Census Bureau figures. The 2000 census counted 112,802 youths.
