Pay cuts approved at CCSF; layoffs avoided

The 2,800 faculty and staff members at City College of San Francisco will have to take a 2 to 5 percent pay cut to help the struggling institution balance its budget, but layoffs were avoided in a budget approved Tuesday. The $186 million operating budget was unanimously passed Tuesday by the board of trustees. It’s down roughly 4 percent from the $192 million budget of the previous year. Read More

CCSF delaying search for permanent chancellor in face of accreditation issues

The search for a permanent chancellor at City College of San Francisco has been halted to allow trustees and college officials to focus on keeping the school’s accreditation. John Rizzo, president of the board of trustees, said that given all the challenges CCSF faces, the institution needs to find a long-term interim chancellor to help fix the problems. “They have to focus on accreditation,” Rizzo said. “That’s something an interim would be more willing to do.” Read More

CCSF faulted for mishandling administrator pensions

City College of San Francisco has been scrutinized by accreditors for weak leadership and poor financial planning in recent months, and now the troubled college is facing off with the state’s pension system for public teachers. A recent audit by the California State Teachers’ Retirement System found that for nearly two decades, the college has signed up administrators who were never legally eligible for pension benefits. The College of San Mateo hit the stretch run of its football season last year in an incredibly strong position.There were three games to go and the Bulldogs were only one game behind City College of San Francisco for first place in the NorCal Conference. Those elected will face numerous challenges, but none more pressing than the college’s efforts to keep its accreditation after a report released by the Accreditation Commission for Community and Junior Colleges found numerous violations. Milton Marks III, a member of the City College of San Francisco board of trustees, died Thursday afternoon due to complications from a brain tumor.Fellow board member and political ally John Rizzo said Marks will be remembered as a bold reformer who was kind and professional, but also not afraid to take on entrenched interests during past tumult at the school. Ailing City College San Francisco chief oversees final day before he retires

City College of San Francisco Chancellor Don Griffin stepped down at a meeting of the college’s Board of Trustees on Thursday night. College officials said in March that Griffin would retire this summer, but two weeks ago he announced that he had been diagnosed with a brain tumor and would leave sooner than planned. He will undergo surgery later this month, he told students and faculty in an email. Read More
